In addition to being an on-line store, this site will
be developed over time to become a major Southern Burgundy
information resource. It is simple, uncluttered, and
easy to navigate. We deliberately avoid popups, Flash, and
all the stuff that gets in the way of ease of use. You
will find here details of all the wines we offer, tasting notes,
information about the regions and the growers, and sections
offering advice on storage, serving, and matching wine with
food. There are even a few recipes. We hope you enjoy the site
- please browse away! The site will be constantly updated as our
range grows, and as additional information is added, so please
bookmark it and come back often. Please see the News section
for future developments.
Beaujolais is a well-known name, yet as a
wine region it remains much misunderstood. Most
people will have tried a bottle or two of Beaujolais
or Beaujolais Villages in their time, and of course
many too will have tried Beaujolais Nouveau - the new
wine from the vintage - in November of each year. These
wines can be excellent - but there is so much more to Beaujolais,
and many never scratch beneath the surface and discover
the true gems that are to be enjoyed, possibly because of
the limelight stolen by the Nouveau. There are 10 other
wines from the Beaujolais district - the Crus - each of which
has its own distinct character and style. Some you may know,
but others you are unlikely to have heard of. The crus are the
best wines of the district; they are Brouilly, Côte de Brouilly,
Chénas, Chiroubles, Fleurie, Juliénas, Morgon,
Moulin-à-Vent, Régnié, and last but
not least, romantically named Saint-Amour - the wine of love.
Beaujolais is principally a red wine, made using the Gamay
Noir à Jus Blanc grape - which comes into its own on the
granite soils of the Beaujolais and produces classic wines here;
there is also a small amount of white and Rosé wine made.
Within the Beaujolais region - as with any winemaking region
- there exists a wide spectrum of winemakers, ranging from large
industrial-scale co-operatives down to small family businesses
who may only make a few thousand bottles a year. It is here, with
the small-scale individual growers, where we focus our range
of wines. The fine Beaujolais wines we offer are truly superb products
- real gems, hand-crafted with flair by some of the best small-scale
producers in the region, many known to us for many years, and all passionate
about their wines, which have great character and charm. Many of these
vins de propriété are produced only in small quantities,
usually insufficient to satisfy the demands of supermarkets or major
retail chains, whose operations are geared around much larger volumes.
In many cases their estates have been passed down through many generations
of their families, and their skills and knowledge have been inherited
from their ancestors. So many of them are driven by a quest for quality,
the traditional ways, their love of the land and their way of life, and
just as their wines are true works of art, they are indeed artists.
We are specialists in this field and have assembled one of the finest
ranges of these wines in the UK, so go on - try some of these superb
wines - we know you will enjoy them.
