Wagram

This is a region to the north-west of Vienna, with an interesting geological quirk. Ice-age glaciers have created a huge barrier of soil which borders the river Danube for many kilometers, and today vineyards are planted along this rise - the so-called mighty "Wagram" which now gives it's name to ther region. With some 2,730 hectares of vines, Wagram's predominant variety is Grüner Veltliner, which here makes spicy sappy wines. Pinot Blanc is also grown, with some limited production of reds.

Grüner Veltliner 2006
Steinberg
Karl Fritsch
Weingut Fritsch, Kirchberg/Wagram
 Ref: 4370006
*
£
A Grüner Veltliner from 43-year old vines grown on the Steinberg vineyard's slate soils. Fermented for 14 days at 20°C in high-grade steel tanks, with a further maturation period prior to release also in steel. A very pale yellow-green, with a peppery earthy nose with hints of white pears. On the palate it has quite a concentrated fleshy character, with plenty of minerals and fruit and typical GV spiciness on the long finish. Crisp and dry white with good bite; very more-ish. Chill to 9° C and serve on its own as an apéritif, or drink with asparagus dishes, seafood or white meats such as pork or chicken.

Stift Klosterneuberg

Weingut Stift Klosterneuburg is the winemaking operation of the historic Augustinian Monastery in the town of Klosterneuburg, located in the north-western suburbs of Vienna. At nearly 900-years old, it is one of the oldest and most well-respected wine producers in Austria. The monastery is traditionally associated with viticulture , scholarship, and art, and has an extensive library, enormous wine cellars, and the famous Verduner Altar (1181) by Nicholaus of Verdun. Today, the Monastery owns vineyards in Klosterneuburg itself, and also in Vienna, both growing predominantly white grapes, and at Tattendorf in Thermenregion, where grapes for red wines are grown. Of particular interest are the excellent value white varietals, and fine Sekt.  The town of Klosterneuburg is also home to the Federal College of Viticulture, one of the only schools in the world with a focus on wine-making, and the viticultural research station responsible for, amongst other things, the creation of the Zweigelt red grape variety in 1922.

Weissburgunder 2007
Stiftswein
Stift Klosterneuburg
Klosterneuburg, Wagram
 Ref: 4370011

Kahlenbergerdorf is ideal Weißburgunder territory - surrounded by the slopes of the Nußberg, Kahlenberg and Leopoldsberg, bordered by the Danube to the east, the highest quality crop can be harvested year after year. The Weißburgunder made its way to Austria from France's Champagne and Burgundy Regions, from where it originates.

What makes this Burgundy wine from Kahlenbergerdorf so impressive are its exotic fruit aromas, such as mango and papaya, its nutty taste and its harmony. Its extract-rich body, combined with a fine, well incorporated sharpness, give this wine elegance and depth.

Food Recommendation: An ideal companion to cold or warm asparagus dishes, pork medallions, cold starters, meaty fish, baked or fresh nutbread.
