Wagram

This is a region to the north-west of Vienna, with an interesting geological quirk. Ice-age glaciers have created a huge barrier of soil which borders the river Danube for many kilometers, and today vineyards are planted along this rise - the so-called mighty "Wagram" which now gives it's name to ther region. With some 2,730 hectares of vines, Wagram's predominant variety is Grüner Veltliner, which here makes spicy sappy wines. Pinot Blanc is also grown, with some limited production of reds.

The Schlossberg is one of the top Donauland sites, it's loess soils providing rich powerful GVs with remarkable longevity. This wine is made from vines aged 16 years, with cool fermentation (19°C for 24 days) in high-grade stainless steel. Due to rigorous grape selection it is made in only tiny quantities.

A medium yellow-green, with aromas of ripe exotic tropical fruits, spice and pepper. On the palate it is soft, yet rich and creamy, with explosive fruit and a hint of caramel. Long luxurious finish, with spice evident. Long storage potential. A wine which convincingly pulls off the elusive combination elegance and power, Fritsch's Schlossberg GV is one of the best Donauland whites and represents excellent value for a wine of this quality. Falstaff: 93 points.

Stift Klosterneuberg

Weingut Stift Klosterneuberg is the winemaking operation of the historic Augustinian Monastery in the town of Klosterneuberg, located in the north-western suburbs of Vienna. At nearly 900-years old, it is one of the oldest and most well-respected wine producers in Austria. The monastery is traditionally associated with viticulture , scholarship, and art, and has an extensive library, enormous wine cellars, and the famous Verduner Altar (1181) by Nicholaus of Verdun. Today, the Monastery owns vineyards in Klosterneuberg itself, and also in Vienna, both growing predominantly white grapes, and at Tattendorf in Thermenregion, where grapes for red wines are grown. Of particular interest are the excellent value white varietals, and fine Sekt.  The town of Klosterneuberg is also home to the Federal College of Viticulture, one of the only schools in the world with a focus on wine-making, and the viticultural research station responsible for, amongst other things, the creation of the Zweigelt red grape variety in 1922.

Weissburgunder 2007
Stiftswein
Stift Klosterneuburg
Klosterneuburg, Wagram
 Ref: 437011

Kahlenbergerdorf is ideal Weißburgunder territory - surrounded by the slopes of the Nußberg, Kahlenberg and Leopoldsberg, bordered by the Danube to the east, the highest quality crop can be harvested year after year. The Weißburgunder made its way to Austria from France's Champagne and Burgundy Regions, from where it originates.

What makes this Burgundy wine from Kahlenbergerdorf so impressive are its exotic fruit aromas, such as mango and papaya, its nutty taste and its harmony. Its extract-rich body, combined with a fine, well incorporated sharpness, give this wine elegance and depth.

Food Recommendation: An ideal companion to cold or warm asparagus dishes, pork medallions, cold starters, meaty fish, baked or fresh nutbread.

Zweigelt Rosé 2007
Stiftswein
Stift Klosterneuburg
Klosterneuburg, Wagram
 Ref: 437014

The Rosé 2006 from the Stift Klosterneuburg Wine Estate is a particularly fruity, light wine. Its delicate pink is reminiscent of the colour of a shallot skin, with a spicy and fresh aroma, and both juicy fruitiness and stimulating tartness on the palate. It's made from Zweigelt with just a tiny splash of St Laurent - which adds some body - but it really is oinly a very little, perhaps 5% or so, as otherwise the colour would be affected - St Laurent makes brown rosé!

Food Recommendation: Cold starters, pasta and vegetable dishes, classic Viennese cuisine.

Serving Temperature: 6-7 °C
