Wachau - Riesling
Wachau Riesling
On this page you will find some of the best white wines Austria has to offer, and many more rating stars than on an average page in the catalogue. Most of Austria's greatest dry whites are made from Riesling, Austrian Rieslings are amongst the best in the world, and maybe just maybe, Riesling is the best wine grape in the world. To give of its best though, it is fussy about where it is planted - and it simply thrives on many outstanding sites in Austria - on mainly primary rock, or
urgestein
soils. We aim to offer you no less than the UK's best range of Austrian Rieslings - all of which will come from top-notch makers, mainly in the Wachau, including many wines from truly world-class sites. Many of these admittedly have price tags to match - and because we know not everyone wants to pay that much, we also include a couple of makers whose wines will not break the bank. All the wines in our list are truly outstanding, their quality is a revelation, and yet they are quite different from those from Germany or Alsace. Here, fine Rieslings are typically dry and substantial, with as much as 14% alcohol, yet have a raciness and delicacy arguably unsurpassed anywhere. Riesling lovers are bound to find something they like here......

Riesling 2005
Loibner Loibenberg
Dinstlgut Loiben
Ref: 430014
*
£
This wine is made from Riesling grapes grown in stone terraces (dating from the 14th century) on the Loibenberg, at an altitude of some 420 metres. The flavours are heavily influenced by the Urgestein soils in the Wachau and on the Loibenberg in particular.
A gold-yellow with green tinges; a rich nose of minerals and citrus notes, with a touch of spice and herbs. On the palate again spice and herbs, with ripe fruit in abundance, lively acidity, mineral underpinning, and good balance. Food recommendation: seafood, fish of all kinds, poultry. Also works well with hard cheeses and some spicy ethnic foods.

A pronounced yellow-green, nose of white flowers and peardrops, soft dense minerals on the mid-wight palate, with masses of fruit - flavours of vanilla and those peardrops again, very typical Riesling which shows well from this mineral site.

Riesling Spätlese 2001
Loibner Loibenberg "L"
Dinstlgut Loiben
Ref: 240113
*
This wine is made from a selection of grapes from the best parts of the Loibenberg, which are late harvested, giving a deeper yellow than is typical for Loibenberg wines. It's only made in years when conditions are right, and 2001 was a good year for botrytis, helping colour and concentration. This is a truly lovely wine; the nose is of concentrated citrus aromas, principally lime, but also lemon and stone fruit. It explodes in the mouth, full of zingy and immensely complex lime and lemon flavours, and also apricot, and peach, and has a spicy creamy texture. Despite being classified lieblich, this wine is best described as off-dry. A big wine which will develop further; an example from 1997 tasted recently had immense depth of flavour and concentration. An excellent match for flavoursome foods; try it with spicy food, (Thai, Malaysian) or chicken livers.

Ried Klaus
Weingut Josef Jamek
Joching
Ref: 430021
**
£
The Klaus Smaragd wines are monuments to Austrian wine culture, and are amongst the best Rieslings in the world, so it's interesting to see how the Federpiels turn out. Klaus is adjacent to Achleiten, lower down the hillside closer to the river, and is one of the steepest terraced sites in the entire Wachau (see the picture) on soils of gneiss and slate. Pale green-yellow, with a toasted oatmeal and spice nose, the Federspiel is medium-bodied, with mealy oaty flavours, toast, dark spices, with a supremely smooth mineral texture. There is huge length, with spices and some salt on the finish. This wine is angular, with great clarity and pinpoint precision of flavour. So, an entirely deserved 2 stars AND £ sign for a Federspiel.

Riesling Smaragd 2003
Tausendeimerberg
Weingut Karl Lagler
Spitz-an-der-Donau
Ref: 240121
**
The Tausendeimerberg ("thousand bucket hill") is situated behind the centre of the village of Spitz-an-der-Donau, sited on a dramatic bend in the Danube, and on its steep slopes are to be found some of the best vineyard sites in the area. This Riesling has a lovely pale yellow-green colour, and a fruity zesty nose with tangerine and lime, and floral aromas. On the palate there are flavours of peaches and more citrus fruit, an elegant acidity, a rich creamy texture, and a long lingering finish. It is still however young, and requires a few months in bottle to open up. A truly lovely wine from a top maker. Bottled 10 November 2003.

A bright yellow colour with green tinges, with a nose of tangerine peel, tropical fruit, and minerals; the palate has firm structure, with good fruit, citrus flavours, hints of orange and tangerine, and huge length. Ever-so slightly off-dry. This is a superb wine which will age well. Arguably Lagler's best Riesling.

A pale golden yellow, with an extremely clear/pure appearance. A fruity nose of white peaches, apricots, cress, and undefined citrus fruit, with minerals and a hint of smoke; on the fresh lively palate there is a good fruit-acid framework, with the balance tipping towards the mineral, but with good grape and some tropical fruit flavours (I detected mango), and underripe melon. Good length. Excellent stuff, will not disappoint..

Hollerin

Another of Austria's great Rieslings, of which we are lucky to have a (very) tiny allocation. Hollerin is adjacent to the Kellerberg, another top site, and has rich urgestein and loess soils which produce distinctive Rieslings. The nose has fragrant aromas of white peach and redcurrant; on the palate this is classic elegant Riesling, full-bodied, chewy and sinewy, bags of flavour with a mix of fruit and mineral components. Huge length, seems to go on forever.

Loibner Loibenberg

From the renowned Loibenberg, this jewel of a wine has a pale yellow-green colour, and a soft gentle mineral nose. The palate is more fruit than minerals, with pears, citrus, and tropical fruit flavours, dried fruits, with a rich creamy texture. Very smooth with good finish. Still young but already has complexity, which will develop further.

Another of the Austrian greats; still very young and a bit of a conundrum really, because whilst the nose is still quite closed, the palate is already very open, and ticks all the right boxes; it's huge and has an almost meaty density, one of the biggest Rieslings of the Austrian 2005 vintage. It's immensely ripe, with creamy fruit & minerals to the fore, with some hints of roasted sweet green pepper, smoke, and huge length.

Similar sounding, but not to be confused with the Loibenberg. The Liebenberg is a vineyard located between Weissenkirchen and Dürnstein, and is the furthest Alzinger site from the winery.
A beautiful pale golden-green, this wine has an elegant fruity nose with notes of herbs and green pine. On the palate, the style is a mix of fruit, predominantly pears, and minerals. A juicy sappy racy wine, lovely now, but in time this will be extraordinary.

Riesling Smaragd 2005
Steinertal
Weingut Leo Alzinger
Unterloiben
Ref: 430029
***
The Steinertal vineyard is considered by many to be the best site in the Wachau; its primary rock soils are known for producing wines with the most pronounced mineral character in the Loiben area.
The 2005 vintage of this wine has a pale yellow-green colour, and a restrained nose of yellow apple, stone fruits, white pepper, and delicate white flower fragrance. The palate is wonderfully complex, with spices, stone fruit (peaches, plums), and a slightly herbal note. There is racy acidity which integrates perfectly with the wine's fruit. The wine is still very young yet already quite opulent and will become more so with a spot of bottle aging. Huge length, with strong minerality showng on the finish. Seriously yummy stuff, and one of my picks of the 2005 vintage from Austria.

Riesling Reserve 2005
Weingut Leo Alzinger
Unterloiben
Ref: 430026
**(*)
Following on from the resounding success of his Grüner Veltliner reserve, Leo Alzinger has crafted a Riesling along similar lines. As with the GV, the goal in creating this wine was to prove just how good Wachau Riesling can be. It is made from the very best selections of Riesling grapes from a mixture of the estate vineyards, all of which are in their own right of the highest quality. Generally, smaller grapes are used, these having greater concentration of flavour. As the wine comes from a mix of sites, there is a good mix of fruit and mineral characteristics. Grapes for this wine were harvested in late October 2005, gently pressed, and fermentated in stainless steel tanks, with all movement gravity driven to avoid pump damage to yeast cells. The nose is classic fine Riesling, aromatic, and with honeyed notes; the palate is complex, with masses of concentrated fruit, and some subtle minerality. In this wine, Herr Alzinger's goal has been achieved; it is already an outstanding example of what can be achieved with the Riesling grape, and is already remarkably open for such a young wine. It will age extremely well, at least 10 years, and in doing so will develop even greater depth of flavour. Exceptional.
ABV 14.5%, residual sugar 12.8g/litre.
