Vins Henri Badoux, Aigle, Vaux, Switzerland

Vins Henri Badoux, Aigle, Vaux, Switzerland

Founded in 1908, Badoux make a wide range of wines from grapes grown in and around Aigle and neighbouring Yvorne, and further afield in the Valais.

The "Aigle Les Murailles" is one of the top wines - and one of the most famous - in Switzerland, and the crazy steep vineyards are amongst the most spectacular around. Besides the classic Aigle wines, there are also fascinating white Chasselas and powerful red blends from Lavaux and from the Chablais towns of Yvorne and Ollon. The Valais selection is also notable - the Fendant and Dole are classic pillars of our range, and there is also a full range of regional varieties.

Swiss star oenologue Daniel Dufaux - previously from other Nick Dobson Wine suppliers "Vins Dufaux" & "F&D Giroud", and president of the Swiss Oenologues - continues to take Badoux from strength to strength - as shown by the "Cuvée Prestige" range and the "Lézard Rouge".

Lezard Rouge 2011, Henri Badoux, Aigle, Vaud Ref: 4112032

This is something quite unique - a ripasso-style wine of Swiss Pinot Noir over Garanoir. Created for the 100th anniversary of the company, with a label designed by artist Hans Erni, this will become a classic.

A dark red colour, the wine has a a generous nose of ripe berries, coffee and toasted nuts, on a background note of vanilla. In the mouth, this is a powerful and concentrated wine, still very much Pinot Noir but with a touch of wildness and fruit from the Garanoir.

This is a fabulous wine with poultry - especially turkey - and game birds.

Aigle Les Murailles, AOC 2011, Henri Badoux, Aigle, Vaud Ref: 4112034

This wine, with its quirky Lizard label, is one of the premier wines of the Chablais, if not the entire Vaud. It is made from Chasselas grapes grown on the steeply terraced vineyards climbing the hills behind the town of Aigle and its fairytale Château. The soil is light gravel/shale, and the vineyards give full exposure to the sun. The warm dry Foehn winds maintain the microclimate which pertains right up until the harvest, ensuring ripening beyond the reach of the dampness and mists of autumn, protecting the grapes from rot. The wine has a pale golden yellow colour, with a rich, spicy pungent nose, with hints of caramel. On the palate it is dry, predominantly mineral, yet with good fruit following. The finish is initially warming, then develops with a dry minerality and a beautiful elegant bitterness that is extremely long. A lovely wine; serve at 8-10°C on its own, or with freshwater fish or white meat dishes.

Pinot Noir Yvorne AOC 2008 Barrique de Chêne Henri Badoux, Aigle Ref: 4121009

This wine is made from grapes grown in the Chablay Vaudois, on gravel soils overlaying sandstone and limestone. Winemaking includes 8-10 days temperature-controlled maceration, the first 2-3 days of which were at an elevated at 28° C, allowing maximum extraction of color. The wine undergoes full malolactic fermentation prior to ageing for 12 months in oak barrels.

An intense ruby red with a classic Pinot nose with plenty of black fruit, cassis, and vanilla, with also some earth and dark spice. On the palate full bodied and powerful, quite lush and rich, with plenty of ripe fruit, and soft gentle tannins, subtle vanilla from the oak, which is not at all overdone, and good structure. Excellent length, dry, warming, and spicy; try with red meat dishes with rich sauces, lamb, beef, and or pork dishes, and soft cheeses.

Gamay du Chablais Vaudois 2009 Henri Badoux, Aigle Ref: 4121010

Switzerland is one of the few places outside of the Beaujolais in France where Gamay is grown commercially with respectable results. Much comes from the Geneva area, but Chablais and Valais also produce good Gamay based wines. Styles vary but much Swiss Gamay is more earthy and gamey than red Beaujolais.

Medium cherry red, with a light nose of spice, earth, and damp undergrowth. On the palate this wine is much fuller-bodied and rich than the nose suggests, with very forward fruit, and a soft truffly spicy earthiness quite typical of good Swiss Gamay, yet also with the richness of cooked red fruits. Good length, gamey and warming. Allow to breathe for at least half an hour. More of a wine for food, drink around 14-15 degrees C with gammon, hams, or meats with rich sauces. Would also work well with grilled meat, some richer pasta dishes, and strong cheeses.

Heida du Valais 2009 Henri Badoux, Aigle Ref: 4110155

This wine comes from vineyards on the hillsides around Chamoson, where vines grow on schist soils. The 2009 vintage followed a cold winter, and the vegetative cycle was late starting, but caught up later in the season due to a very hot May and June. An erratic summer with periods of rain followed, and a cool September allowd slow maturation, promoting the concentration of aromas. Vinification was traditional, aging in stainless steel tanks and without malolactic fermentation. A beautiful golden straw yellow with aromas of lemongrass and resin. On the palate good attack, rich, with good structure. Mineral and creamy with yeasty notes. An ideal apéritif, goes well with asparagus, fish dishes, or soft cheeses. Serve at 10 to 12°C.
