Unique Wines

Almost all the wines we stock are quite unique. Many are from rarely seen varieties, or products of heroic winemaking, reflecting the terroir and the style of the producer in very distinctive ways.

But there are some wines which take unique to a different degree - to puzzle and delight and surprise even very jaded wine experts.

Grenzenlos die Leidenshaft, Gruner Veltliner 2005 Martin Arndorfer White Ref: 4312022

This is something truly one of a kind in Grüner Veltliner and one I (Joelle) have wanted to find for quite a while. I met Martin through a recommendation by another merchant, and through the Steininger family, and once I tasted at Vie Vinum I'm afraid I dragged quite a few of my Austrian contacts there just to say "that's what I mean when I say someone should let more Grüner Veltliner age".

Austrian Winemakers experiment a lot, but not much with the ageing of white wines. We in the UK know that Rieslings, Grüner Veltliner and many other whites can develop amazingly with age, and so do the winemakers, but the Austrians themselves tend to focus on (sometimes extremely) young wines. This is something many winemakers deplore, but few risk doing something about it.

As you can probably guess, Martin Arndorfer is doing something with this wine, called Grenzenlos (without limits). He goes all out! It could be just a curiosity, but it is instead a superb wine. This is Grüner Veltliner from the 2005 harvest, aged in barrels and steel tanks for 5 years then given additional time to mature on lie, and released now.

Not an every day wine, but if you like aged white wines from the Italy, the Rhone or Burgundy, this will amaze. And if you've ever enjoyed our Austrian bin ends, you owe it to yourself to try this on a special occasion.

Brut Rosé 1er Cru Nature (ZERO DOSAGE) Champagne Roger Brun Aÿ-Champagne SOLD OUT Ref: 3388021

Once in a while we come across something very special, and this wine is just that! The first time I visited Brun, this wine had not been released for sale, but I was offered a taste of the zero dosage version, which would not normally be offered for the UK market. But this wine was just fabulous and I managed to get hold of a limited amount.

Composition is 90 % Pinot Noir, 10 % Pinot Meunier, from Mareuil/Ay and Mutigny. It's made using saignée - like a red wine, but the maceration is shorter, one or two days instead of the minimum 5 days for red wine production. Vinification is in stainless steel. It's only made in good years, with very mature grapes from old vineyards, and in small quantities. Fruity and intense, crisp and of course very dry, with a long lingering finish. Stunning stuff, very moreish indeed.

Philippe Brun describes it thus:- "Rare! Made the authentic way, direct from harvest.".

Dornfelder QbA Trocken 2009 (RED) Weingut Kollmann-Lex,Thörnich) SOLD OUT Ref: 4930072

This is a treat. A very dark inky ruby red, approaching opaque, this wine has a nose whch is creamy and earthy with notes of cooked dark berry fruit. On the palate there is full, ripe dark fruit - loganberries and blackberries - with a chalky, earthy overtone, and a slightly herbal note. Lovely creamy texture, and good length, with some spice on the long finish. This really is a lovely wine, and quite a find. Can be drunk on its own, or with food (pork schnitzel, spicy sausages work well).

12.5% ABV, 2g/litre residual sugar, 5.3g/litre acidity. Serve 14-16°C - also works well chilled - treat as you ould a mid-weight Beaujolais Cru, like a Chiroubles or Côte de Brouilly.

We are delighted that this wine has been selected for the OZ CLARKE 250 BEST WINES 2011 guide - weighing in at number 76 out of 250 - in which the following description appears:-

"Red wines in the Mosel, whatever next? Red grapes need warmth and the ultra-cool Mosel has always been a light white domain. Yet here we are in the very good Riesling village of Klüsserath with a really lovely red. If that isn't proof of global warming... Actually Dornfelder performs best when it's not too hot and this is a lovely ripe yet cool style, scented with apple blossom and orchard leaves, flowing with a plum and apple juice sweetness and acidity that softens its minerality and fades away to a scented lingering aftertaste."

L'Instant Plaisir Domaine Fernand Gravallon & Cédric Lathuilière Ref: 3332145

This is an extremely unusual wine from the Beaujolais; a spakling wine made from the Gamay grape, which is quite delightful. You don't see a lot of sparkling wine from these parts, and when you do see such wines, they are normally made from Chardonnay originating from the southern part of the region where there is a greater incidence of chalky soils. Sparkling Gamay is indeed a rarity, and you are in for a real treat. This particular example comes from vineyards in the commune of St Jean d'Ardières, to the south of Villié-Morgon on the road to Belleville sur Saône. Technically the wine is "vin mousseux", made using the traditional Champagne method. Whilst the vineyard is in AOC Beaujolais, the producer is not allowed to state this on the label, because the wine is specifically designed to only have 8% alcohol by volume, too low to be classified as Beaulolais AOC and hence legally it's just a humble vin de table. No vintage is declared on the label but the grapes are from 2009. It was a bit of a problem knowing which section to put it in, but in the end I put the main listing in the Morgon section because that's where the producer is based and that's what their real speciality is.

It's a lovely, lovely wine; it has very pale green/pink tinges, with a nose of apples and pears and strawberries, all reflected on the palate along with a fine mousse. There is loads of fruit, and good balancing acidity. This is the perfect summer sparkler; drink well chilled on its own or with fish, white meats, salads, grills etc. And the low alcohol helps at lunchtime!

Zweigelt Eiswein 2007 37.5cl "Hesperia" Weingut Felsner Grunddorf, Kremstal, Austria Ref: 4310008

Sweet Red Wine
A truly amazing and rare wine, and one which we are proud to list. Not a lot of Eiswein is made in Austria, and most of it is white, so to find not only a red Eiswein, but one which is of such outstanding quality, is really very special. "Hesperia" is one of the Hesperides in Greek mythology. The Hesperides were nymphs who tended a blissful garden in a far western corner of the world, an oasis of peace where where a grove of immortality-giving golden apples grew. The Hesperides are sometimes called the Western Maidens, the Daughters of the Evening, or the Sunset Goddesses.
The wine is named after the colour of this sunset - a brilliant pink-orange hue. The wine has intense fruit flavours - pungent plum, orange zest and lychee show great purity. A sweet entry leads to a firm, full-bodied palate with balanced sweetness. Lengthy, ripe, flavorful finish. Not only the concentration of aromas, but also the amazing balance of sugar and racy acidity meshes in an ethereal package, making this wine elegant and seductive.
The grapes for Hesperia were harvested after an early deep frost on Dec. 19, 2007 when temperature dropped below -10° C. Exceptional, fully ripened and totally healthy grapes, naturally frozen on the vine, were hand picked. The pressing was immediate and done extremely slowly and carefully with a 300 year-old wood press. The yield is only 10% of that of autumn harvested grapes - it takes every single grape from an entire vine to yield just enough juice to make one bottle of Eiswein. Add the risk of grapes being stolen by hungry birds or other critters, or damaged by hail or harsh winter winds, and you can understand why the harvest is so precious and valuable.

Ice wine pours much more thickly than regular wine, which is the first indication of its concentration of flavour. You will be struck by its colour - a lovely salmon pink. The bouquet will then sweep over you, a heady blend of exotic fruits and fragrances. Ice wine has very intense flavours and a unique blend of sweetness and dryness - all at the same time.

ABV: 12 % Residual Sugar: 160 g/L
Serving temperature: well chilled (5 - 7 ° C
Suggested food pairings: Créme brulee, fruit gratin dishes, custards, sabayons, tartes, flans, cheese cake, chocolate desserts, ginger bread, Goose liver pate, Blue cheeses (Roquefort, Stilton), dishes with a touch of sweetness such as glazed ham

Awards & reviews

92 points - Wine & Spirits Magazine, Issue April 2009

"This unusual dessert wine is a coppery pink in color, with silky aromas of red plum, tangerine and roasted peach. It feels concentrated and vivid even though it's not overly large in body, possessing a deft balance of acidity and persisting with excellent fragrance and length."
