Traisental

Bordering the Wachau and Kremstal regions, and south of the Danube, lies Traisental, which takes its name from the river Traisen, a tributary to the Danube. Wine was made here before the Romans conquered these lands, as far back as Celtic times, and today production is centred around the important town of Traismauer, with its satellite villages of Inzersdorf, Nussdorf, Getzersdorf, and Reichersdorf, with their terraced vineyards in lovely countryside. The majority of wine here is white, principally fresh zesty Grüner Veltliner, but useful reds are made too, mainly from Zweigelt and Blauer Portugieser. Traisental is a relatively obscure region, and offers some of the best value for money going in Austria.

Grüner Veltliner 2008 Erich Altenriederer Traismauer-Wagram
Ref: 4391007
££

A super classic GV offering fantastic value for money. This wine is made by Erich Altenriederer at his estate in Traismauer, which is on the south bank of the Danube about 5 miles east of Krems.

A light golden-yellow, with a light nose of minerals and spice. On the palate there are sharp green flavours, minerals again, spice, and cracked white pepper, and surprisingly good length for a wine at this price. It's a light but flavoursome style of wine ideally suited to seafood, fish of all types, and white meats. It makes a great summer wine - great for the barbecue! Drink chilled, around 8-10°C.

In stock - normally despatched within one working day.

Price: £10.20 (Including VAT at 20%)

Zweigelt 2009 Erich Altenriederer Traismauer-Wagram
Ref: 4391009
**

The new vintage of Erich Altenriderer's Zweigelt - he doesn't make it every year but he did in 2009 and the wine is a great success. A dark brick red, with spice, nutmeg, pepper and earth on the nose. On the palate it's a juicy sappy wine, with spice, cherries, and dark berry fruit flavours. Good length, gamey and spicy. You can chill it as you would a mid-weight Beaujolais which makes it a great summer wine. An excellent value Zweigelt. As with the 2006 vintage, Erich can claim the success of having this wine selected for the Oz Clarke 250 Best Wines Guide, this time the 2012 edition, weighing in at number 85/250, where the following description appears:-

"Zweigelt is a smashing Austrian grape. If it had a French name we'd probably lap it up and it would be a drinkers' darling. But having a German name at the moment condemns a wine to pleading with wine lovers just to give it a chance. Well, I'll do the pleading this time. This is about as crunchy as a red wine gets. Crunchy as in celery, as in white peppercorns, and this gives a mouth-watering chewy rasp to the full red plum fruit and a mellow softness like red cherry shortbread. Full of fruit, savoury and scented with lovage, as chewy as grape skins, as juicy as the blood red grape itself."
