Saint-Amour
Saint-Amour

At the northern limit of the Beaujolais lies the romantically-named Cru of Saint-Amour, where granitic soils of the Beaujolais, favoured by the Gamay, give way to limestone in the Mâconnais to the north, better for Chardonnay. At this boundary, many of the vignerons own land in both the Beaujolais and the Mâconnais districts and make and sell wines from both regions; Saint-Amour in fact borders the Saint-Véran appellation in the Mâconnais. After Chénas, Saint-Amour is the second smallest Cru. The name is derived from Saint Amateur, a Roman soldier who converted to Christianity and founded a monastery overlooking the river Sâone. Today, much is made of the name, and the wines are heavily promoted in connection with Saint Valentines day. Saint-Amour wines can sometimes be a little reserved when young, needing some time to open up and show their character. After a year or so however, they become supple and fruity, with flavours of apricot, cherries, sometimes spicy, and with great intensity of colour. Serve at about 13° and enjoy them with red meat, poultry, or game.

Saint-Amour 2005
Domaine Matray
Lilian & Sandrine Matray

The 2005 Matray Saint Amour is a lovely wine; a beautiful ruby red, intense fruity aromas, with rich red fruit flavours. It has good structure, and is beautifully smooth and elegant. Warming, and with good length. Drink around 14° with offal, poultries, game birds, and white meats. Or alternatively chill it and drink with pasta dishes or just on its own.

Saint-Amour 2005
Domaine des Champs Grillés
Évelyne & Jean Guy Revillon
(Labelled Bottle)
 Ref: 330063

This Domaine has been in the same family for 5 generations, and has a fine reputation throughout the Beaujolais. It has 10 hectares of vines which are located on the hillsides of Saint-Amour overlooking the Saône valley to the east. We have been visiting here for many years, and have found the Saint-Amour made by Évelyne & Jean Guy Revillon to be consistently excellent. They only make Saint-Amour, and they do it well. A bit of history here - Mme. Revillon's father, Louis Dailly, was in fact the man responsible for the founding of the Saint-Amour appellation in 1945.

TN in preparation.

Drink between 12°-14° with red meats or poultry. Available with label shown or in silk-screen printed Cupid-themed bottle - see below, code 330063C
