Rheinhessen

The Rheinhessen is the area between the Rhine and the Nahe, to the southwest of Mainz, one of Germany's great cities and the historic birthplace of printing - the Gutenberg museum is here. Rheinhessen is not classically pretty winegrowing country, and is the largest of the German wine regions. Much of the wine made here is unexceptional, with the majority being sold in bulk. However, a few thousand growers bottle their own wine, and amongst these are some who rank amongst the best in Germany, and some world-class wines are made here, principally along the Rhine around Nackenheim, Nierstein, and Oppenheim. Only a small proportion of the grapes grown here are Riesling, which is concentrated in a few exceptional sites.

We offer Rheinhessen wines from the renowned 10-hectare Gunderloch estate, run by Fritz and Agnes Hasselbach. The estate has vines in the world-renowned Rothenburg vineyard, where the proximity to the river Rhine, the red slate soils, and the steep slope provide a perfect microclimate for the Riesling grape. This, coupled with the deliberately low yields of 50hl/ha, creates wines of great concentration, and tremendous aging potential.  The Nackenheim Rothenburg Riesling Spätlese 2002 was awarded the ultimate accolade of the Best Spätlese of the Year in All Germany by Gault-Millau, Germany's most respected wine guide, and was awarded 93 points by Wine Spectator magazine. These wines are available in only very limited quantities.

**(*)
This is listed elsewhere on the Mosel page, as it logically goes with the selection of wines made by Josef Lex at Klüsserath in the Mosel. Strictly speaking however, as the grapes are grown by one of Josef's friends in Bingen, some 30 miles away, it is a Rheinhessen wine, so the listing is repeated here.

Those of you used to thin wishy-washy German reds are in for a treat. A very dark inky ruby red, approaching opaque, this wine has a nose whch is creamy and earthy with notes of cooked dark berry fruit. On the palate there is full, ripe dark fruit - loganberries and blackberries - with a chalky, earthy overtone, and a slightly herbal note. Lovely creamy texture, and good length, with some spice on the long finish. This really is a lovely wine, and quite a find. Can be drunk on its own, or with food (pork schnitzel, spicy sausages work well). Also works well chilled - treat as you would a mid-weight Beaujolais Cru, like a Chiroubles or Côte de Brouilly.

Now in stock.
