Online Catalogue |  Germany |  Rheingau

The Rheingau

This is the district along the Rhine between Lorch and Hochheim, around Wiesbaden, where the river has attained majestic proportions, winding its way north to the sea. A relatively compact region, it includes some of the best vineyards in Germany; Riesling is grown in over 80% of the region, occupying most of the best sites. There is a tremendous amount of history here, and the reputation that Rheingau Rieslings enjoy today derives from centuries of winemaking. The climate and predominantly slate soils produce wines with the elegance of a fine Mosel or Nahe Riesling, but with more body and depth of flavour; these are not the cheapest German wines, but are among the best.

We feature wines from Johannes Leitz, of the Josef Leitz estate at Rüdesheim, a small 5.5 hectare estate which he acquired in 1985. Leitz is rated as an "Aufsteige" (rising star) by the Gault Millau German Wine Guide, and has received critical acclaim from Jancis Robinson, who describes Leitz as "one of the absolute superstars, not just of thje Rheingau but of Germany in toto". The best sites owned by the estate are located on the steep slopes around Rüdesheim, and include the Berg Rottland, Berg Roseneck, Magdalenkreuz, and Berg Schlossberg, where the Riesling performs so well.
