Portugal

Wine has been made in Portugal since ancient times, introduced by ancient civilizations such as the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, and Romans. Wine was exported in antiquity to Rome, and a trade with England developed after a treaty in 1703. Portugal also has the oldest appellation system in the world. There are a number of wine-producing regions, but two are of special note as they are protected by UNESCO as World Heritage sites:- the Douro Valley Wine Region (Douro Vinhateiro) and Pico Island Wine Region (Ilha do Pico Vinhateira). The repertoire of grape varieties available in Portugal is mind-bogglingly complex. There are some 500 native varieties, producing a very wide variety of different wines with distinctive personality. The Oxford Companion to Wine describes the country as having "a treasure trove of indigenous grape varieties". Portugal produces some of the world's best wines, as reflected in its success in international competitions.

Our offering is a small but includes excellent selection of fine table wines and Ports from the Douro Valley, and great value wines from small producers in the Vinho Verde region, and also the relatively unknown district of Beira Interior.

Douro Douro
Great wines and Ports from arguably the best Portuguese winemaking region
Beira Interior Beira Interior

Vinho Verde Vinho Verde
Fantastic great value wines from a small producer in Vinho Verde.
