This district is located in the south-west of Germany, with Rheinhessen
to the north, and the Mosel to the north-west. It is named after the river
Nahe, which is a minor tributary of the Rhine. It is one of the lesser-known
winemaking regions in Germany, yet is home to some superb Rieslings, with
a style often described as being transitional between Mosel and Rhine. We
feature a range of truly outstanding world-class wines from Helmut Dönnhoff,
of the Dönnhoff estate at Oberhausen, described by Matt day in Wine
Magazine August 2002 as "undoubtedly the best producer
in the Nahe if not the whole of Germany". 1999 saw Helmut Dönnhoff
named by both Gault Millau, publishers of The German Wine Guide,
and also Feinschmecker magazine, as Winemaker of the Year. Dönnhoff
wines are pure and crystalline in style, with flavours ranging from passion
fruit, guava, and apricot, sweet corn and vanilla, to red berries, and have
a marked minerality.
