The Mosel

The Mosel is one of the great wine regions of Germany, many would say the greatest. This is Riesling country at its best, the combination of microclimates and soils bringing out the very best in this noble grape. Vineyards cling to the banks of the river - some precipitously steep and dramatic. Few of consequence are far from the river, whose steepest valley slopes make the best wine. At this most northerly of latitudes, winemaking can be a bit hit and miss, and a huge variety of microclimates exists, each dependent on the angle and exposure of each slope to the sun. As the Mosel winds north, river bends provide in places perfect exposure to the sun, and make the region immensely beautiful and dramatic. The exceptional 2001, widely acknowledged as the best for a generation, was followed by more excellent vintages in 2002 and 2003. The Mosel is arguably currently the best overall Riesling region in Germany, with many excellent makers producing exquisite wines that are full of fruit. The region has many unique sites and styles, however in general the wines are characterised by a minerality and citrus acidity derived from the slate soils, which hold the heat of the day and ensure full ripeness. Thin topsoils here force the vine roots deep in their search for nutrients, producing wines with high minerality. Phylloxera cannot survive in slate soils, meaning that many vines here are older, on original ungrafted rootstocks, and the lower yields promote higher concentration and complexity of flavour. The region is divided into three main areas - Lower, Middle, and Upper Mosel - whose wines are generally similar in character, but which vary immensely in quality, with Middle Mosel, centred around the picture-postcard town of Bernkastel-Kues, generally acknowledged as producing the best wines. It is from here that our wines are sourced. We are pleased to offer a selection from the highly respected Dr. Loosen estate, located on the banks of the river just north of Bernkastel-Kues.

Weingut Kollmann-Lex, Thörnich

Weingut Kollmann-Lex is a family owned Mosel Wine Estate run by the third generation of the Kollmann family; Bianca Kollmann and her partner Martin Becker took over the business from Bianca’s parents in 2008 and moved the operation from the family property in Detzem to a bigger facility in the heart of the vineyards in Thörnich. The original vision of Bianca’s grandfather was to produce world class wines that express the unique terroirs of the vineyards, and this remains the objective of Kollmann-Lex today. The Mosel Valley with its unique slate soil creates great potential for producing elegant and individual wines. Martin and Bianca are commited to making typical Mosel wines that reflect the minerality of the slate soil in the glass. Kollmann-Lex wines are harmonious, well balanced, full of intense fruit, with exceptional fruit aromas and with a fine acidity. Most of the Kollmann-Lex vineyards are located around the Mosel villages of Thörnich, Detzem, Klüsserath and Pölich. Approx. 70% of the vineyards are planted with Riesling grapes. The Estate also makes some excellent red wines from the Dornfelder and Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) grape varieties. In early 2010, Kollmann-Lex acquired the estate of Josef Lexin Klüsserath, and absorbed the Lex vineyard holdings, thus guaranteeing ongoing availability of the excellent Dornfelder we have been supplying to the UK market for some years.

A tremendous value Riesling from the Mosel. Very pale yellow/green, with a floral nose, with some underlying orchard & stone fruit flavours. Light, refreshing, pleasingly off-dry on the palate. £
Pinot Blanc is not a grape you see often in the Mosel, but it can be very successful. This example gives you a lot of wine for your money; a very pale yellow, almost water-white, with a principally mineral nose, but with some herbal notes. On the palate very dry, again with minerals, burnt stone and slate. Very refreshing, it makes an ideal partner for seafood, white meats, and fish dishes, especially in a creamy sauce. Also great on it's own as an apéritif. Drink chilled.

This is one of Kollmann-Lex's estate wines, and it offers great value and excellent quality. It has a straw yellow/gold colour, with limpid appearance. On the nose are aromas of stone fruits, principally apricots. Crisp, dry, & refreshing on the palate, there is good concentration of fruit with notes of underripe orchard fruit, minerals, and stone fruit on the finish. Quite good length. Works well drunk chilled with white meats, fish, and spicy sausages, or just on it's own.

This Kollmann-Lex estate wine is a very pale yellow, almost water-white. The nose has intense aromas of yellow stone fruit (apricot, peach). On the palate the wine is crisp, dry, and refreshing, with a zippy, lively acidity, balanced by ample fruit - again peaches on the palate, underlaid by a clean delicate minerality. Good length.

A very successful Auslese; complex stone fruit and some limited citrus on nose, reflected on the palate along with rose petals. Finish long, and principally stone fruit. A delightful wine, and one which I could drink all day. Good with sweet desserts, blue cheese, or foie gras, but also nice on its own.

A great value wine at a price which makes Auslese drinking very accessible.

Note!! Bottle size 50cl.

Rosé Halbtrocken 2009 QbA Mosel Weingut Kollmann-Lex,Thörnich
Ref: 4930066
**(*)
This lovely rosé is an unusual blend of 50% Dornfelder and 50% Pinot Noir. A lovely pale salmon pink, with a nose of red berry fruit, with strawberry and redcurrant flavours on the palate. There's a small amount of minerality which shows mainly on the finish - along with a hint of cherry - which has quite good length. It's classified as Halbtrocken, but there's really only the slightest hint of sweetness which arises from a small amount of residual sugar. This makes a fantastic refreshing summer wine - chill it to 9-11°C and drink on its own or with grilled meats, salads, and pasta dishes. Great for barbecues and picnics - and the modest 11% ABV makes it good as a lunchtime wine.

This is exactly the same wine as was made by Josef Lex in previous years, now made by Weingut Kollmann-Lex who have aquired the Lex estate. Those of you used to thin wishy-washy German reds are in for a treat. A very dark inky ruby red, approaching opaque, this wine has a nose whch is creamy and earthy with notes of cooked dark berry fruit. On the palate there is full, ripe dark fruit - loganberries and blackberries - with a chalky, earthy overtone, and a slightly herbal note. Lovely creamy texture, and good length, with some spice on the long finish. This really is a lovely wine, and quite a find. Can be drunk on its own, or with food (pork schnitzel, spicy sausages work well).

12.5% ABV, 2g/litre residual sugar, 5.3g/litre acidity. Serve 14-16°C - also works well chilled - treat as you would a mid-weight Beaujolais Cru, like a Chiroubles or Côte de Brouilly.

Weingut Anton Zimmermann, Bernkastel-Kues

The Zimmermann family has nurtured its winery for four generations. Weingut Zimmermann is run by current generation Josef Zimmermann, whose father Anton (from whom it takes its name) has now retired. Josef is extremely hands-on, managing all aspects of the operation and making the wine. The original building was situated in the heart of the old part of Kues, but twenty-five years ago, the Zimmermann family moved their operations to a central yet peaceful area in new Kues, in a building which formerly housed a wine research center. Zimmermann's vineyards are predominantly on the Kues side of the river - the Kardinalsberg rises on the plateau above Kues, Weisenstein lies to the west of Kues where it rises from the banks of the river, and Rosenberg. White wines are produced by cultivating exclusively traditional Riesling vines. Zimmerman wines are excellent, and offer superb value for money. Wines are available in a variety of styles from trocken, through halbtrocken and auslese through to a selection of dessert wines, including some old Beerenauselese. The highlight of the range is an outstanding eiswein. If you visit the Mosel, Josef's excellent ferienwohnungen, located above the winey, make an excellent base.

Riesling Eiswein 2003 (37.5cl) Bernkastel-Kueser Kardinalsberg Weingut Anton Zimmermann
Ref: 4930021
***
Possibly the finest wine in my list? Josef Zimmermann is justifiably proud of his Eiswein; in a region where many makers have in their portfolio an Eiswein, this one stands out from the crowd by a mile, and I am pleased to have been able to secure a tiny allocation - Josef only made 100 litres of this 100% Riesling wine in 2003 (the harvest was early in the morning on 3 January 2004.) The quantity is so tiny because of the relatively small area of vineyard where conditions for Eiswein occur, and because of the peckish wild boar that roam the vineyards and which are partial to grapes. Josef reckons he loses 50% of the grapes which would otherwise be used for Eiswein to the boar; this is more of a problem in flatter vineyards such as Kardinalsberg - as the boar dislike the steeper slopes found widely elsewhere in the Mosel valley. A light golden yellow, with a rich nose of honey and botrytis, with a hint of smoke. On the palate this wine is nothing short of sumptuous, a rich huge example with tremendous depth of flavour and immense complexity. There are flavours of prunes, honey, peaches, some exotic tropical flavours including passion fruit and mango, with a smokey edge. There are also figs, raisins, sultanas. This wine is incredibly warming, and has huge length - the finish goes on forever. A fabulous wine, reminiscent of some of the best Austrian TBAs and Ausbruchs, and for me undoubtedly the highlight of the Zimmermann range, possibly of my German range. Tremendous ageing potential running to many decades. Definitely one for the Christmas pudding. The photo shows the grapes for this wine being harvested, at 4am on 3 January 2004.

Update April 2010 - A few more bottles just acquired - the last couple of cases in the world!

Weingut Philipps-Eckstein, Graach-Schäferei/Mosel

DLG Winemaker of the Year 2007

Weingut Philipps Eckstein is a small family estate located high on the hillside above the Mosel in the village of Graach-Schäferei, close to Graach itself. The property has been in the family for generations, and offers an excellent range of mainly white wines - but with some decent reds too - as well as an excellent Sekt. The 10 Ha of vineyards are mainly Graacher Himmelreich and Domprobst, but these wines come with prices more appropriate for humbler origins. Many of the wines have been distinguished with medals in German wine competitions, but are not well known outside Germany. Patrick Philipps, current generation proprietor and winemaker, produces excellent wines at excellent prices; this estate is a real find. Not only does the estate make wine, but it also runs a small Winzerwirtschaft, serving wines by the glass and tasty meals, and also a number of rooms to let.  If you are visiting the area, seeking a quiet place to stay, nestled amongst the vineyards, with fabulous views over the Mosel valley below, then consider staying here. More details can be seen here.

The German Department of Nutrition, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (DLG) holds an annual competition in which some 4200 wines from 540 growers all over Germany are judged. To achieve the top level award, producers must be ranked with "outstanding overall achievements", and the Philipps-Eckstein estate has been awarded with three such consecutive Federal Honor Awarda. In 2007, Patrick Philipps was also honored "DLG Winemaker of the Year" upon receiving the third Federal Honor Award in Gold. Receiving such a high award three times in a row is very rare.

Riesling Classic Qualitätswein 2004 Weingut Philipps-Eckstein
Ref: 4930029
*
A very pale lime green, great clarity of appearance. On the nose this wine is light and fruity. It is essentially quite a dry wine, despite being technically halbtrocken - on the palate there is masses of fruit, rather more than the nose suggests, with some citrus flavours, a creamy texture, and minerals on the long fruity finish. An excellent entry-level Riesling which makes a great summer wine, to drink chilled (11-12 degrees) with or without food.

Note:- The "Classic" notation means a wine that has a maximum of 15g/l residual sugar, & minimum 12% ABV. The vineyard may not be specified on the label, although this is from Domprobst. Also can be classified trocken or halbtrocken - this wine is technically halbtrocken, although this is not shown on the label.

Weingut Schmitges, Erden

Erden, a picturesque village on the Mosel, is home to Weingut Schmitges, today run by present generation owner Andreas Schmitges, whose family has been cultivating vines around Erden and making wine since 1744, and who took over the estate from his Father Heinrich in 1990; from his predecessors he has learned the art of patient, careful winemaking. Whilst the estate is small - only 4 hectares (10 acres) - it has some of the best plots in the Mosel, owning vineyards in the top Erdener Treppchen and Erdener Prälat sites, and also Bussaly and Herrenberg.  Andreas is fanatical about quality, and is constantly striving to improve his products. The bulk of production - 85% - is from Riesling, some vines being ungrafted and other on American rootstock. The remaining 15% is  Rivaner. Weingut Schmitges was the 2001 winner of the “Best of Riesling” challenge in the category of light and dry Riesling. The competition included 1,740 Riesling wines from 10 countries.

Only a very small quantity of this wine was made and we have a very tiny allocation. This is a masterpiece; a truly top-Spätlese from the Erdener Treppchen, one of the very best sites in the Mosel - the steep, iron-rich red soiled slopes of this site produce quite outstanding wines. On the palate masses of extract, clear and cool, this wine is alive, with fascinating racy, refreshing, zingy acidity, superb finesse and a gorgeous mineral finish. For a wine with 93 Parker points this is outstanding value for money. Andreas reckons this will last till 2020 but my own suspicion is that you won't let it! At only 8.0% ABV, this makes a great lunchtime bottle.

Parker 93 points.

Ref: 4930045
**
A pale golden green/yellow, with a nose of lime, minerals, and with a hint of peach. On the palate peaches and lime; it's rich, with good acidity, and has an initial brief burst of sweetness which recedes to show the fruit. There's a good acid structure and a nice "bite" on the long, rich finish, along with a little spice. This is really a food wine and is still very young - it will benefit substantially from further bottle ageing.

Dr. Loosen Banner
Loosen vines on the Ürziger Würzgarten; note the red volcanic soil.
Ernst (Erni) Loosen makes some of the best wines in Germany. Gault Millau's Winemaker of the Year 2001 has developed a fearsome reputation for quality as one of the new breed of growers making fruit-driven wines of great intensity. Loosen wines are sold worldwide and are the subject of much demand. Nevertheless, this remains essentially a family business; the Dr. Loosen estate is based just north of Bernkastel on the shores of the Mosel, and is currently around 12 hectares including holdings in prime sites along the Mosel in the vicinity (Bernkasteler Lay, Erdener Treppchen, Erdener Prälat, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Ürziger Würzgarten). The Dr. Loosen Estate has been in the family for over 200 years, and Erni has been running it since 1988. The vines in the various sites average 50 years of age, and most are ungrafted and on original rootstock, as Phylloxera can't survive is the Mosel slate soils. These vines create the raw materials to create stunningly intense, world-class wines. Crop size is strictly limited, and Loosen uses only moderate fertilisation, all organic. In the cellar, gentler practices allow the wine to develop its full potential with a minimum of handling and technological meddling.

Willi Schaefer

Willi Schaefer is a well-known name on the German wine scene; he was voted Gault Millau's Aufsteige (rising star) of 1997 and has developed a fine reputation for his Mosel wines. At his miniscule estate in Graach, on the east bank of the Mosel just north of Bernkastel, Willi and his son Christof make sublime wines of immense concentration and sophistication; this is indeed some of the most memorable and glorious Riesling drinking you will experience. Willi reckons his family can trace its winemaking roots in Graach back to 1100AD, and today they own 3.3 ha of vines in Domprobst, Himmelreich, and now also some Wehlener Sonnenuhr.  These really are lovely wines; polished, and highly representative of their individual terroir. They have great clarity, fantastic fruit, depth of flavour and weight.  Willi's wines are the subject of immense demand, and are hard to get hold of. We have a small allocation of some fantastic wines from Domprobst and Himmelreich, and we will not be able to get any more when they have gone.

Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese 2003 Willi Schaefer
Ref: 4930070
***
The heavier soil of Himmelreich has produced a superb wine with this example. The mineral nose is initially quite closed when the bottle is opened, but comes alive quickly. On the palate this wine is intense with citrus, exotic fruits, and some minerality. Lavish and generous, yet elegant, delicate and refined. The residual sugar shows itself as intensity in the fruit rather than overt sweetness. Opening up nicely now after a few years in bottle, but still has a great future ahead of it. Classic Mosel Riesling. The low alcohol makes it a great lunchtime bottle.
