The Mosel

The Mosel is one of the great wine regions of Germany, many would say the greatest. This is Riesling country at its best, the combination of microclimates and soils bringing out the very best in this noble grape. Vineyards cling to the banks of the river - some precipitously steep and dramatic. Few of consequence are far from the river, whose steepest valley slopes make the best wine. At this most northerly of latitudes, winemaking can be a bit hit and miss, and a huge variety of microclimates exists, each dependent on the angle and exposure of each slope to the sun. As the Mosel winds north, river bends provide in places perfect exposure to the sun, and make the region immensely beautiful and dramatic. The exceptional 2001, widely acknowledged as the best for a generation, was followed by more excellent vintages in 2002 and 2003. The Mosel is arguably currently the best overall Riesling region in Germany, with many excellent makers producing exquisite wines that are full of fruit. The region has many unique sites and styles, however in general the wines are characterised by a minerality and citrus acidity derived from the slate soils, which hold the heat of the day and ensure full ripeness. Thin topsoils here force the vine roots deep in their search for nutrients, producing wines with high minerality. Phylloxera cannot survive in slate soils, meaning that many vines here are older, on original ungrafted rootstocks, and the lower yields promote higher concentration and complexity of flavour. The region is divided into three main areas - Lower, Middle, and Upper Mosel - whose wines are generally similar in character, but which vary immensely in quality, with Middle Mosel, centred around the picture-postcard town of Bernkastel-Kues, generally acknowledged as producing the best wines. It is from here that our wines are sourced. We are pleased to offer a selection from the highly respected Dr. Loosen estate, located on the banks of the river just north of Bernkastel-Kues, and also from Willi Schaefer in Graach, whose wines are just sublime.

Weingut Josef Lex, Klüsserath

A fine selection of wines from Weingut Lex, run by Josef Lex and his wife Doris, in the village of Klüsserath on the banks of the Mosel. The Lex vineyards lie at an altitude of 250 metres, on the steep rock slopes of the Klüsserather Bruderschaft, a hill behind the village. The heat-storing schieferhaltigen soils offer ideal conditions to the Riesling vine. Lex wines are typical of this stretch of the Mosel; the estate has been in family hands for decades and Josef's experience and the favourable site combine to create lovely wines. As well as his Rieslings, Josef makes one of the best Dornfelder reds that I have tasted. Best of all, Lex wines are an absolute bargain.

Weingut Anton Zimmermann, Bernkastel-Kues

The Zimmermann family has nurtured its winery for four generations. The original building was situated in the heart of the old part of Kues. Twenty-five years ago, the Zimmermann family moved their operations to a central yet peaceful area in new Kues. The current location formerly housed a wine research center. White wines are produced by cultivating exclusively traditional Riesling vines. Zimmerman wines are excellent, and offer superb value for money. The highlight of the range is an outstanding eiswein.

Eiswein 2003 (Riesling) 37.5cl
Bernkastel-Kueser Kardinalsberg
Weingut Anton Zimmermann
 Ref: 493021
***
Possibly the finest wine in my list? Josef Zimmermann is justifiably proud of his Eiswein; in a region where many makers have in their portfolio an Eiswein, this one stands out from the crowd by a mile, and I am pleased to have been able to secure a tiny allocation - Josef only made 100 litres of this 100% Riesling wine in 2003 (the harvest was early in the morning on 3 January 2004.) The quantity is so tiny because of the relatively small area of vineyard where conditions for Eiswein occur, and because of the peckish wild boar that roam the vineyards and which are partial to grapes. Josef reckons he loses 50% of the grapes which would otherwise be used for Eiswein to the boar; this is more of a problem in flatter vineyards such as Kardinalsberg - as the boar dislike the steeper slopes found widely elsewhere in the Mosel valley. A light golden yellow, with a rich nose of honey and botrytis, with a hint of smoke. On the palate this wine is nothing short of sumptuous, a rich huge example with tremendous depth of flavour and immense complexity. There are flavours of prunes, honey, peaches, some exotic tropical flavours including passion fruit and mango, with a smokey edge. There are also figs, raisins, sultanas. This wine is incredibly warming, and has huge length - the finish goes on forever. A fabulous wine, reminiscent of some of the best Austrian TBAs and Ausbruchs, and for me undoubtedly the highlight of the Zimmermann range, possibly of my German range. Tremendous ageing potential running to many decades. Definitely one for the Christmas pudding. The photo shows the grapes for this wine being harvested, at 4am on 3 January 2004.

Weingut Philipps-Eckstein, Graach-Schäferei/Mosel

Weingut Philipps Eckstein is a small family estate located high on the hillside above the Mosel in the village of Graach-Schäferei, close to Graach itself. The property has been in the family for generations, and offers an excellent range of mainly white wines - but with some decent reds too - as well as an excellent Sekt. The vineyards are mainly Graacher Himmelreich and Domprobst, but these wines come with prices more appropriate for humbler origins. Many of the wines have been distinguished with medals in German wine competitions, but are not well known outside Germany. Patrick Philipps, current generation proprietor and winemaker, gets a mention on the German Gault-Millau wine guide. Excellent wines at excellent prices, and a real find.

Not only does the estate make wine, but it also runs a small Winzerwirtschaft, serving wines by the glass and tasty meals, and also a number of rooms to let.  If you are visiting the area, seeking a quiet place to stay, nestled amongst the vineyards, with fabulous views over the Mosel valley below, then consider staying here. More details can be seen here.

Riesling Classic Qualitätswein 2004
Weingut Philipps-Eckstein
 Ref: 493029
*
A very pale lime green, great clarity of appearance. On the nose this wine is light and fruity. It is essentially quite a dry wine, despite being technically halbtrocken - on the palate there is masses of fruit, rather more than the nose suggests, with some citrus flavours, a creamy texture, and minerals on the long fruity finish. An excellent entry-level Riesling which makes a great summer wine, to drink chilled (11-12 degrees) with or without food.

Note:- The "Classic" notation means a wine that has a maximum of 15g/l residual sugar, & minimum 12% ABV. The vineyard may not be specified on the label, although this is from Domprobst. Also can be classified trocken or halbtrocken - this wine is technically halbtrocken, although this is not shown on the label.

In a region where many winemakers make a Sekt, this one stands out from the crowd. Often Sekt is made with lesser grapes from undistinguished sites, but here we have a real gem. Patrick Philipps makes just 700 bottles a year of this delightful Sekt from 100% Riesling from none other than the Graacher Domprobst vineyard, using the Champagne "methode traditionelle". Dornfelder Trocken (RED) 2005

There isn't much red wine made from grapes grown on the Himmelreich, a prime Riesling site, so this is quite unusual. A deep red, with a light fruity nose. On the palate it is dry, with good fruit, hints of spice and pepper, and good length, again dry and spicy. A flexible wine - it will work quite well chilled, rather like a mid-weight Beaujolais Cru, to make a nice summer wine, or around 14-15 degrees with food.

Again a bit of a rarity - Domprobst being a Riesling site - this wine is a clear light red, with a fruity nose. On the palate it is relatively light-bodied, with soft dry fruity flavours - strawberries and cream! Good length, slightly earthy, with a dry fruity finish and just a hint of spice. Works well on its own or with food - great with hams, gammons, pork dishes especially.

Weingut Schmitges, Erden

Erden, a picturesque village on the Mosel, is home to Weingut Schmitges, today run by present generation owner Andreas Schmitges, whose family has been cultivating vines around Erden and making wine since 1744, and who took over the estate from his Father Heinrich in 1990; from his predecessors he has learned the art of patient, careful winemaking. Whilst the estate is small - only 4 hectares (10 acres) - it has some of the best plots in the Mosel, owning vineyards in the top Erdener Treppchen and Erdener Prälat sites, and also Bussaly and Herrenberg.  Andreas is fanatical about quality, and is constantly striving to improve his products. The bulk of production - 85% - is from Riesling, some vines being ungrafted and other on American rootstock. The remaining 15% is  Rivaner. Weingut Schmitges was the 2001 winner of the “Best of Riesling” challenge in the category of light and dry Riesling. The competition included 1,740 Riesling wines from 10 countries.

I first tasted this wine with with Andreas at his house in Erden, and was impressed at the time, but it was only on a retasting in the UK that I began to think that in it's own way this is the star of the Schmitges list, perhaps offering one of the best price/quality ratios of my German range.

It's a very pale golden yellow, clear and limpid in the glass, with a rich complex nose of Gooseberry, banana, and spice, underpinned with a fine minerality typical of Treppchen. There's a huge amount going on in there; also we have very ripe stone fruit aromas, a citrus note - principally lime - and it evolves quite quickly in the glass. After a couple of minutes the minerals recede, and the lime aromas intensify, with a grassiness vaguely reminiscent of a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. All this is reflected on the palate, where a sweetness emerges, and whilst the flavours start dominated by the exotics, over a few minutes it tends towards stone fruit. It's got a very creamy texture, and is very long, with a peachy finish. Fantastic value for money.

A wine made from Erdener Prälat Riesling vines aged over 40 years, this is in fact a declassified Auslese, with 102 degrees Oechsle.

A pale golden yellow, the expressive nose has plenty of clean, vivid riesling fruit, spice, smoke, wet stone, gooseberries, and some exotics including a hint of banana, with a profound mineral underpinning. On the palate there is plenty of spicy fruit, and a wonderful creaminess. It's powerful, dense, and well-balanced. Essentially off-dry, with a little residual sugar helping to lift the fruit. Good length and a classic Riesling finish. A top class Riesling which is frankly delicious. More of a wine for food.

A pale golden green/yellow, with a nose of lime, minerals, and with a hint of peach. On the palate peaches and lime; it's rich, with good acidity, and has an initial brief burst of sweetness which recedes to show the fruit. This is really a food wine and is still very young - it will benefit substantially from further bottle ageing.

A lovely wine but unfortunately one which plays havoc with my star rating system! Andreas, along with some other German producers, has taken to appending stars - in this case 3 of them - to the name of some of his wines. I also rate this as a 3-star wine according to my own system, hence the preponderance of stars above.

This is about as good as Riesling gets. A pale limpid green/yellow, and a complex expressive nose with profound aromas of citrus, spice, gooseberry, white peach and grey slate/mineral leap out of the glass at you, along with just a hint of honeyed botrytis. On the palate this wine is rich and opulent and has beautiful clean citrus-minty fruit - principally apricot, peaches, nectarine and other stone fruit, and a hint of green apple. There is an underlying honeyed sweetness and good balancing acidity, a beautiful creamy texture, and a very very long finish, with stone fruit and minerals dominating. A truly noble sweet terroir wine; fabulous stuff, described by Stuart Piggott thus:-

"This liquid gold tastes like the incarnation of the steep slope, on which it grew. With these noble wines one can sample and experience the Terroir: Aromas from the geological depth and freshness like from water that cascades over rocks into a deep gorge".

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave it 95 points.

The ideal companion for goose, duck, chicken livers, Roquefort, sweet desserts, foie gras, etc. etc.

Dr. Loosen Banner
Loosen vines on the Ürziger Würzgarten; note the red volcanic soil.
Ernst (Erni) Loosen makes some of the best wines in Germany. Gault Millau's Winemaker of the Year 2001 has developed a fearsome reputation for quality as one of the new breed of growers making fruit-driven wines of great intensity. Loosen wines are sold worldwide and are the subject of much demand. Nevertheless, this remains essentially a family business; the Dr. Loosen estate is based just north of Bernkastel on the shores of the Mosel, and is currently around 12 hectares including holdings in prime sites along the Mosel in the vicinity (Bernkasteler Lay, Erdener Treppchen, Erdener Prälat, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Ürziger Würzgarten). The Dr. Loosen Estate has been in the family for over 200 years, and Erni has been running it since 1988. The vines in the various sites average 50 years of age, and most are ungrafted and on original rootstock, as Phylloxera can't survive is the Mosel slate soils. These vines create the raw materials to create stunningly intense, world-class wines. Crop size is strictly limited, and Loosen uses only moderate fertilisation, all organic. In the cellar, gentler practices allow the wine to develop
its full potential with a minimum of handling and technological meddling.

The blue-grey slate of the steep Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard, on the banks of the Mosel just north of Bernkastel, gives this very light coloured wine a nose of tropical fruits (mango, guava); on the palate, there is good clean crisp acidity, with peaches and citrus fruit. Graceful.

The Wines of Willi Schaefer

Willi Schaefer is a well-known name on the German wine scene; he was voted Gault Millau's Aufsteige (rising star) of 1997 and has developed a fine reputation for his Mosel wines. At his miniscule estate in Graach, on the east bank of the Mosel just north of Bernkastel, Willi and his son Christof make sublime wines of immense concentration and sophistication; this is indeed some of the most memorable and glorious Riesling drinking you will experience. Willi reckons his family can trace its winemaking roots in Graach back to 1100AD, and today they own 3.3 ha of vines in Domprobst, Himmelreich, and now also some Wehlener Sonnenuhr.  The Domprobst is probably the best. These really are lovely wines; polished, and highly representative of their individual terroir. They have great clarity, fantastic fruit, depth of flavour and weight.  Willi's wines are the subject of immense demand, and are hard to get hold of. We have a small allocation of some fantastic wines from Domprobst and Himmelreich, and we will not be able to get any more when they have gone.

The 2003 vintage is excellent; Willi started picking on the 10th October, and continued till the end of the month uninterrupted by rain. The harvest was completed about a month earlier than usual, and the dry summer and autumn means there was very little botrytis. The Graacher Himmelreichs have intense fruit balanced with good acidity; the Domprobst is rather rounder.

Spätlese

Graacher Himmelreich
Riesling Spätlese 2003
Willi Schaefer
 Ref: 4930070

The heavier soil of Himmelreich has produced a superb wine with this example. The mineral nose is initially quite closed when the bottle is opened, but comes alive quickly. On the palate this wine is intense with citrus, exotic fruits, and some minerality. Lavish and generous, yet elegant, delicate and refined. The residual sugar shows itself as intensity in the fruit rather than overt sweetness. Opening up nicely now after a few years in bottle, but still has a great future ahead of it. Classic Mosel Riesling. The low alcohol makes it a great lunchtime bottle.

8% ABV, 45g/l residual sugar
