Mâconnais Wines

Mâconnais wines are principally dry whites made from the Chardonnay grape, which thrives on the local limestone soils. A small amount of red is also made, most from Gamay but also a tiny amount from Pinot Noir. It is the whites however which are the main focus of interest, and we offer a good selection of Mâconnais whites, including well-known appellations such as Pouilly-Fuissé and Saint Véran, but also wines from the outstanding newly-created appellation of Viré-Clessé, and of course good-value Mâcon-Villages. The growers are all small family-scale businesses, all passionate about quality. Mâconnais wines represent a bit of a bargain - real white Burgundies at a fraction of the cost of those from the northern part of the region.  They accompany marvellously fish, poultry, and white meat dishes.

Mâcon Villages

Mâcon-Villages is the predominant appellation in the Mâconnais, and is a white wine made from the Chardonnay grape. It is an easy wine to drink, and goes well with seafood. Good examples will be gently golden in colour, with floral aromas and will taste of Chardonnay, often with hints of other fruits such as peaches, and sometimes with citrus flavours. Mâcon-Villages can come from any of more than 40 villages in the area, and may be labelled simply as "Mâcon-Villages", or if from a single village, with the village identified on the label as an appendage to the name "Mâcon" - so a wine from Lugny would be "Macon-Lugny", one from Loché would be "Macon-Loché" etc. It is a pretty region of gently-contoured rolling hills, small villages and open countryside criss-crossed with country lanes, with mixed cultivation meaning that unlike the Beaujolais, one does not encounter a sea of vines everywhere - there are also grain and vegetables to be seen growing in the fields. .

Mâcon-Villages from Daniel Pollier is a delight; the wine is from a miniscule vineyard (only 1.1 hectares) at Igé, where young Chardonnay vines grow on chalky soil. Unoaked, it has a pale yellow-green colour, and a nose of fresh ripe fruit and white flowers. The palate is fresh and fruity, with good body and honey & citrus flavours, with just a hint of tropical fruit. Chill to around 13° C and drink with chicken, seafood or fish dishes. Equally good as an aperitif.

Pouilly-Vinzelles

A tiny satellite appellation, making such small quantities of wine that finding it can be hard. Pouilly-Vinzelles is an excellent alternative to Pouilly-Fuissé, with both good definition and character. We are pleased to offer two excellent examples from the Château de Vinzelles, including one made from 100-year-old vines. Best served between the temperatures of 11 and 13° C, Pouilly-Vinzelles wines are ideal companions for fish, shellfish, poultry and other white meats, and other dishes ranging from the powerful (eg goat's cheese) to the delicate (eg foie gras).

A good example of a Pouilly-Vinzelles; a pale yellow-green, with a floral fruity nose, soft and full Chardonnay flavours and a hint of honey make this an elegant wine; chill and drink on its own or with white meat dishes.

A delightful Pouilly-Vinzelles made from a parcel of 100 year-old chardonnay vines known as "Les Pétaux" (the petals). These low-yielding old vines give a powerful wine of great concentration, intensely flavoured, dry, with minerality and good length. A gentle golden colour, with a fragrant nose of apricots and plums, with a hint of grapefruit. The palate is powerful, sumptuous, and well-balanced; a distinguished and refined expression of Chardonnay flavors. Drink now and for the next 4-5 years.

Viré-Clessé

Viré-Clessé is a new appellation, formed from two of the communes previously forming part of the group comprising the Mâcon-Villages appellation, Viré and Clessé (whose former appellations Mâcon-Viré and Mâcon-Clessé have now disappeared) and also Montbellet and Laizé. This was justified on the grounds that the wines from these communes were some of the best in the Mâcon-Villages, and elevation to appellation status was deserved. My personal view is that this is entirely justifed, as the quality of the wines we have drunk from around the Viré area over the years goes to show. There is a certain novelty value surrounding elevation to appellation status, and there may be upwards pressure on prices in the future.

L'Épinet
Domaine Sainte Barbe
Jean-Marie Chaland
 Ref: 190404

This is a delicious special cuvée made by Jean-Marie Chaland, from an east-south-easterly facing vineyard with vines aged about 40 years, grown on deep alluvial clay/gravel soils. Oak aged Chardonnay, this wine has a delicate golden-green colour, a distinctly fruity floral nose with rich notes of toast and lemon, honey and peardrops, and significant depth of taste, with a good structure and a good long aftertaste. The minimal impact of the wood adds roundness and does not predominate. This is a superb well-balanced white Burgundy which will grace any table, and would be a particularly fine companion for most fish dishes (particularly those in a cream sauce), shellfish, fruits de mer, salmon, poulet à la crème, charcuterie, andouillettes, frogs legs, fondue, raclette, and fine cheeses. Also makes a splendid apéritif. Serve around 10-13°C; will keep 5-10 years.

Saint-Véran

The Saint Véran appellation covers about 500 hectares in the communes of Chasselas, Leynes, Davayé, Prissé, Chânes, and St. Vérand, and accounts for nearly a tenth of all Mâconnais wine production. Wines are dry white from the Chardonnay grape. The skills of the winemaker, the microclimates, and the huge diversity of soils yield wines with a variety of styles and characteristics, with aromas ranging from fresh white fruits, such as pear and apple, to floral such as lime, acacia, and honeysuckle. With ageing, these fade, giving way to a more complex bouquet of honey, roasted hazlenuts, and almonds, and if the wine has been oak-aged, hints of vanilla. The palate is characterised by roundness, with intense Chardonnay fruit. Saint Véran wines have good keeping qualities. The colour will typically be golden with green tinges. Smoothness and elegance sum up the appellation of Saint Véran; these are fine wines to accompany fish dishes, shellfish, white meats and chicken cooked in cream sauces. Saint Véran wines are normally served chilled, at around 11°.

Poully-Fuissé

Arguably the best appellation in the Mâconnais, and much favoured by international clientele, especially the Americans, which has forced up prices. The Pouilly-Fuissé apellation encompasses the villages of Pouilly, Fuissé, Vergison, and Chaintré, clustered around the massive rocky outcrops of Vergisson and Solutré, where prehistoric man hunted by driving wild animals to fall to their deaths. There are no Premiers Crus in Pouilly-Fuissé, but sometimes a vineyard name is appended to the label. Good examples of Pouilly-Fuissé will have a glorious golden or golden-green colour, and be complex and fruity, with an often floral perfume, and flavours of nuts and stone-fruit, sometimes peaches. It makes an excellent accompaniment to seafood dishes. We offer Pouilly-Fuissé wines from the excellent Domaine Daniel Pollier, in the heart of the village of Fuissé.

Fuissé

Domaine Daniel Pollier
Pouilly-Fuissé 2005
Vielles Vignes
 Ref: 331006

This Pouilly-Fuissé from Daniel Pollier comes from a 5 hectare vineyard on chalky clay. The vines are aged on average 40 years, with some parcels as old as 72 years. Following autumn vinification, the wine matures in oak for 10 months - and as with the St. Véran, 25% new oak is introduced every year. A charming golden colour, this subtle wine has great finesse, with nuances of hazlenuts and grilled almonds. The maturation in oak adds honey flavours and hints of toast. You can keep this 6-8 years after the vintage. Of the two Pouilly-Fuissé wines we offer from Daniel Pollier, this one is softer and gentler. Grape: Chardonnay

Les Perrières
 Ref: 331007
*
Pouilly-Fuissé "Les Perrières" from Daniel Pollier comes from a very small (0.46 hectares) parcel of vines planted in 1960, on steeply sloping clay-chalk soil at Fuissé. Vinification is temperature controlled, and maturation is in oak barrels. This is a slightly racier wine than Pollier's Pouilly Fuissé Vielles Vignes, with greater attack and excellent structure; aromas of citrus fruits, vanilla, and oak, with citrus flavours, a note of dried fruit, and a long aftertaste. Charming wine, with elegant oakiness yet without loss of the original fruit. Superb with fish and chicken dishes, this will not disappoint. Very approachable now but young and will benefit from further bottle age. The choice for laying down. Grape: Chardonnay.
