Kremstal White Wines
Kremstal
We offer a small but good range of wines from the Kremstal, the region along the Danube bordering the eastern end of the Wachau, encompassing the towns of Krems itself, Stein, and Und. The main varieties grown are Riesling and Grüner Veltliner, grown on primary granite rock in the west, and clay and limestone (loess) in the east and south. Some Chardonnay is now grown. The wines tend to be elegant, with rich fruity bouquets.

Grüner Veltliner 2003
Alte Reben

*
This wine is from a selection of better quality grapes from older vines (aged on average 60 years) grown on loess, and is late harvested to achieve maximum ripeness. A pale golden yellow, typical with late harvested GV, with tremendous clarity and purity of colour. This wine is simply stunning; it has an intense nose of pepper, spice, and cress; the palate is intensely concentrated and reflects the nose, but also there is smooth minerality, a touch of honey and a hint of pear-drops. Just very very slightly off-dry. There is also exceptional length. GV at its finest; if this doesn't convert non-believers to GV then I don't know what will. This is exceptional stuff, great to drink now, but will benefit from another year to show its full splendour, will also age very well (10+ years). Falstaff: 90-92 points. 13.5% ABV

"Veltliner Privat"
Senftenberger Piri
Weingut Martin Nigl, Senftenberg
Ref: 431002
**
To my mind somewhat more refined than the Alte Reben; this is from Martin Nigl's oldest vines (35+ years), which grow on Urgestein soils in arguably the best single vineyard site in the Nigl portfolio, and have low yields and correspondingly high quality. The "Privat" range contains the best examples Martin Nigl produces. Medium-green yellow, also with great clarity/purity of colour. The nose is full of sappy green orchard fruit, white pepper, spice, and just a hint of sweetness; on the palate this wine is mouth-filling, spicy, with both fruit and harmonious minerality. Exquisite, with geat length and tremendous aging potential. 14.0% ABV. Falstaff: 92-94 points. 14.0% ABV. Natural cork.
