Kamptal

Tucked away to the west of Vienna, between the Kremstal, Donauland, and Weinviertel, lies Kamptal, which takes its name from the River Kamp which runs through the region. The region is centred on Langenlois, which is Austria's largest wine town, and key wine villages include Kammern, Zöbing, and Gobelsburg. The region is dominated by a high-lying area known as the Heiligenstein, documented as long ago as 1280 as “Hellerstein”, or Hell Rock, because of the burning sun it enjoys, perfect for ripening grapes. Daytime sun warms the hillsides while at night the vineyards are cooled by the river and fresh breezes from the north. White grape varieties develop a spicy aroma, a fine acidity and a crystal-clear mineral character. Reds develop fine berry tones and delicate fruit, and are among Austria’s most elegant.

Grüner Veltliner 2006
Heiligenstein
Weingut Josef Hirsch, Kammern
 Ref: 4390004
*
£
A typical Grüner Veltliner from the loamy soils of the Heiligenstein near Kammern. The vines are 25 years old with a planting density of 4.500/ha giving a low-ish yield of 40 hl/ha. Fermentation is with 50% cultured and 50% natural yeasts. A pale yellow-green, highly limpid, with a bright nose of yellow pepper and spice, on the palate it's juicy, sappy, and fruity, yet with loads of minerals and hints of green pepper, caraway seeds, and fennel. Great length, slight hint of sweetness on the finish. This wine would partner well with asparagus dishes.

Riesling 2006
Gaisberg
Weingut Josef Hirsch, Kammern
 Ref: 4390007

This is one of Austria's Great Rieslings. 35 year-old vines on the Zöbinger Gaisberg, with it's brown soils of weathered mica slate, give forth this wonder - a great powerful, complex, lavish thing.

Harvested in October, the wine's life begins with whole cluster pressing, then fermentation without temperature control in high-grade steel tank and subsequently large oak barrels, where the wine sits on the lees till April, before summer bottling; the wine is then rested several months before release.

Limited quantity.
