Juliénas
Juliénas
Juliénas was making wine in Roman times; some say the name is derived from that of Julius Caesar, whence it takes characteristics of strength, fortitude - and of course a fine purple robe. The appellation, decreed in 1938, is located in the far north of the Rhône département, near the Mâconnais, with some 600 hectares of vines located at an altitude varying from 230m-430m, with southerly exposure, in a sheltered valley giving protection from northerly winds, providing ideal conditions to ripen Gamay grapes. Juliénas wines typically have good structure and a deep ruby-red color, with intense berry-fruit flavours (blackcurrants, raspberries), and aromas of peach, red-berry fruit, peony, violet and cinnamon. Soil types vary somewhat - granite in the west, sedimentary in the east, and occasional veins of manganese, meaning that styles also vary. Best drunk around 13°, a fine Juliénas accompanies red meats, game, or poultry dishes with rich sauces extremely well. Juliénas can be drunk young but improves after a year or two in bottle.
Juliénas 2005
Domaine Bernard Santé

Domaine Bernard Santé (see also Chénas and Moulin-à-Vent) makes a stunning classic Juliénas, the Domaine flagship wine, from vines aged between 50 & 70 years, growing on clay soils. Grapes are harvested entirely by hand, and vinification is traditional, lasting typically 6-8 days. With a vibrant purple colour, it has complex floral aromas of roses, peony, and iris, and is substantial, powerful, intensely fruity, with a fine long aftertaste. Needing 18 months to 2 years or thereabouts for the bouquet and flavour to show its true potential, this Juliénas is excellent now but will keep up to around 5 years from the vintage. It goes marvellously with coq au vin, red meats, game, and cheeses; serve around 13°-16° depending on the age of the wine - towards the top of this range as it ages. This Juliénas has an established following within the French Restaurant trade, and we are now pleased to offer it to you.

This is the jewel in the crown of the Matray range of wines; made from grapes from vines aged on average over 60 years, it spends 10 months in oak. Deep ruby red with granite tinges, it has a nose of vanilla, spice, and raspberries. Supple and well balanced, this is a powerful wine which will keep many years. Excellent.

Rikiki - Elixir des Anges
(Fortified Wine/Apéritif)
Domaine Matray
Lilian and Sandrine Matray
Ref: 330078
**
Rikiki - Domaine Matray's "Elixir of the Angels" - is a most unusual and very delicious find - a fortified Beaujolais wine made from the Gamay grape. The wine is at first allowed a 10-day meceration, which gives it tremendous depth of colour and extract. The "Paradis" - the first juice to run off from the winemaking process - is intensely fruity and at this stage light in alcohol - around 9% ABV. The precise production method is kept secret, but involves boosting the overall alcoholic strength to around 15%, which has the effect of stopping further fermentation.
Rikiki has the essential character of a poweful Beaujolais Cru yet there is much, much more to this drink - it has an intensity of flavour not normlly found in a Beaujolais. It has good depth of colour, and a rich powerful nose of red and black fruit, including blackcurrant and redcurrant. On the palate it is fruity and very rich, with a little sweetness, resulting from the arrested fermentation. Best served cold (6-7 deg C), as an apéritif. Also makes an excellent companion for cholcolate-flavoured desserts, or with melon. This is not a wine you would want to drink a whole bottle of at a single sitting - it's probably too rich for that - but in moderation it's lovely. It can be drunk young but equally can be aged for 10+ years. ABV 15.0%.
