Sweet German Wines
Some of the best sweet wines on earth come from Germany. When conditions are right, wonderful botrytis wines can be made - Auslese, Beerenauslese, and Trockenbeerenauslese. And at these northerly extremes of wine-growing territory, cold winters can give the freezing conditions necessary for exquisite Eiswein.

A pale lime green, with an arresting nose which is full of limey citrus and underripe apple. It explodes in the mouth with lots of limey citrus flavours and has a smooth creamy sweetness, lots of vibrant crystalline fruit, and excellent length. An extremely good value for money dessert wine.

Graacher Domprobst
Weingut Philipps-Eckstein, Graach-Schäferei
Ref: 493048S
A wine made from rigourously selected botrytised grapes from the renowned Graacher Domprobst. A vivid golden yellow, with a rich nose with botrytis and lime aromas. On the palate this is very lively, with complex tropical flavours dominated by lime and some botrytis. A lavish opulent sweetness, like a great well of barley sugar, with perfectly balanced sugar and acidity. Huge length, with the finish dominated by limey citrus flavours, but with some caramel, and a slightly herbal note. Fabulous wine, winner of the "Goldene Kammerpreismunze". 196.6g/l residual sugar, 7.3g/l acidity, 9.5% ABV.
Now in stock. Very limited quantity.

This is a stunning TBA made from highly botrytised grapes from Domprobst. It's a bright limpid golden yellow, with a huge nose of honey, lime, and botrytis. On the palate it is lavish, opulent, immense; a hugely complex wine of great intensity, exploding in the mouth with tropical and citrus flavours; there's a huge amount going on in there, with lime, passion fruit, and some papaya, with honey and botrytis flavours. Goes on forever. An immense wine, utterly stunning. Fantastic with foie gras, sweet desserts. Very small production.
Fabulous wine, winner of the "Goldene Kammerpreismunze". 241.4g/l residual sugar, 8.5g/l acidity, 7.5% ABV.

An Eiswein made from grapes grown in the renowned Graacher Himmelreich. A bright golden yellow, limpid, and with high viscosity. There is a complex powerful nose, principally of of limey citrus, but there are also some tropical fruity aromas in there. The palate is a riot of citrus flavours, principally lime again, and is lavish, complex, and powerful. There is huge depth of flavour, and the finish seems to go on forever. A beautiful wine.

Eiswein 2003 (Riesling) 37.5cl
Bernkastel-Kueser Kardinalsberg

Possibly the finest wine in my list? Josef Zimmermann is justifiably proud of his Eiswein; in a region where many makers have in their portfolio an Eiswein, this one stands out from the crowd by a mile, and I am pleased to have been able to secure a tiny allocation - Josef only made 100 litres of this 100% Riesling wine in 2003 (the harvest was early in the morning on 3 January 2004.) The quantity is so tiny because of the relatively small area of vineyard where conditions for Eiswein occur, and because of the peckish wild boar that roam the vineyards and which are partial to grapes. Josef reckons he loses 50% of the grapes which would otherwise be used for Eiswein to the boar; this is more of a problem in flatter vineyards such as Kardinalsberg - as the boar dislike the steeper slopes found widely elsewhere in the Mosel valley. A light golden yellow, with a rich nose of honey and botrytis, with a hint of smoke. On the palate this wine is nothing short of sumptuous, a rich huge example with tremendous depth of flavour and immense complexity. There are flavours of prunes, honey, peaches, some exotic tropical flavours including passion fruit and mango, with a smokey edge. There are also figs, raisins, sultanas. This wine is incredibly warming, and has huge length - the finish goes on forever. A fabulous wine, reminiscent of some of the best Austrian TBAs and Ausbruchs, and for me undoubtedly the highlight of the Zimmermann range, possibly of my German range. Tremendous ageing potential running to many decades. Definitely one for the Christmas pudding. The photo shows the grapes for this wine being harvested, at 4am on 3 January 2004.
