Fleurie

Not only an excellent wine, Fleurie is also a pretty village with a superb church, and one of the best Restaurants in the Beaujolais. Atop a hill high above the village stands the evocative chapel of La Madone, visible for miles around. This is an excellent picnic spot, with far-reaching views over the beautiful Beaujolais countryside to le Mont Brouilly in the south, and towards the Alps in the east - sometimes Mont Blanc can be clearly seen. A fine tranquil spot for a lazy lunch with a good bottle of Fleurie. The characteristics of a typical Fleurie reflect its name; very floral, with aromas of iris and violets. Often highly coloured and well-structured, Fleurie wines are elegant and smooth, sometimes described as feminine. The charming name may have contributed to recent popularity, both in the UK and in other European countries, notably Switzerland, which has pushed up demand and hence prices in recent years. In view of this popularity we offer you a wide selection of Fleurie wines - the widest of any Cru in our current range.

Fleurie 2005
Domaine du Niagara
 Ref: 330045

A classic Fleurie made by Arnaud Despres, the son of Jean-Marc Despres of Domaine de la Madone, from 5.6 ha of vines, some of which are aged over 80 years, grown on the south-facing sun-drenched hillside facing la Madone. Domaine du Niagara was taken over by Arnaud directly from his grandfather Philibert in 2005; he makes just this single wine. Rich and full-bodied, with dark fruit flavours, it is already quite approachable but will benefit from a year or two more in bottle. Chill in summer or with serve at 13° to 14°C with white meat dishes. Will keep 5+ years.

Available now.

Cuvée Tradition
Domaine du Point du Jour

The classic Fleurie offering from our newest Fleurie supplier; Jocelyne Depardon at Domaine du Point du Jour makes a superb range of Fleurie wines, along with a few other Crus to boot. The house style is full-bodied gutsy wines, with spice and minerals, and this is no exception. Good depth of colour; the nose is of warm fruity spice, cloves, and just a hint of nutmeg; on the palate there's loads of ripe red & black berry fruit, again a lick of spice, a mineral underpinning, a hint of gaminess, & a silky-smooth texture. Excellent length. The more of their wines I drink the more I am convinced this Domaine is quite a find. Will keep 5+ years, although I am reliably informed that wines from 1942 and 1947 are still drinkable (the '47 is better, apparently - who says Beaujolais doesn't keep?). Chill in summer or with serve at 13° to 14°C with ham, pork, gammon, or other white meat dishes.

Fleurie, which can be quite a delicate wine, does not always take well to oaking, but this example works well. It's a dark ruby red, with a nose which clearly shows oak, but principally through vanilla aromas; on the palate there is plenty of red berry fruit and vanilla, with a pronounced smoothness, and beautifully integrated silky tannins; it's dry, and has excellent length with a savoury finish. It's medium-bodied and perhaps best described as elegant rather than blockbusting - for that, go for the oaked Fleurie from Jean-Marc Despres - but for those who like their red wines with some oak but not too full-bodied - and supremely smooth - this is the better choice. Works well with gammons and red meats - allow to breathe for half an hour & serve at 14° to 15°C .

Much more intense than the "La Madone Cuvée Tradition"; a profound deep purple colour, powerful aromas of violet and bilberry, delicate silky texture. Tremendous intensity of fruit. Very small production. Drinking well already but keeps 5+ years. Best with food (lamb, beef), serve around 13-14°C.

Fûts de Chêne
Domaine de La Madone

**(*)
In an appellation which does not always lend itself well to heavy oaking, Jean-Marc Despres has turned out a real success with this wine. It is made from grapes grown in the Madone climat, and is aged for a minimum 12 months in oak, where it undergoes malolactic fermentation. It is a very deep red, with a fantastic nose full of game, vanilla and ripe fruit. It is ample and rich in the mouth, with masses of very ripe cherry and damson fruit and huge length. The oak is evident and provides tremendous structure. Definitely one for food - game would be ideal. Drinking well now but Jean-Marc reckons this will keep 10-15 years. Serve around 13-14°C.
