Fleurie

Not only an excellent wine, Fleurie is also a pretty village with a superb church, and one of the best Restaurants in the Beaujolais. Atop a hill high above the village stands the evocative chapel of La Madone, visible for miles around. This is an excellent picnic spot, with far-reaching views over the beautiful Beaujolais countryside to le Mont Brouilly in the south, and towards the Alps in the east - sometimes Mont Blanc can be clearly seen. A fine tranquil spot for a lazy lunch with a good bottle of Fleurie. The characteristics of a typical Fleurie reflect its name; very floral, with aromas of iris and violets. Often highly coloured and well-structured, Fleurie wines are elegant and smooth, sometimes described as feminine. The charming name may have contributed to recent popularity, both in the UK and in other European countries, notably Switzerland, which has pushed up demand and hence prices in recent years. In view of this popularity we offer you a wide selection of Fleurie wines - the widest of any Cru in our current range.

Fleurie - panoramic view of the vineyards of La Madone, crowned with the chapel Vineyard in the Grille Midi climat of Fleurie. It is common practice to plant roses in vineyards, as these can be early indicators of disease. Fleurie - Welcome sign
Fleurie 2007 Domaine Fernand Gravallon & Cédric Lathuilière
Ref: 3332098

Fernand Gravallon's Fleurie is grown on soils which are principally granitic. The 2007 vintage is a lovely vibrant purple and is beautifully fruity, with raspberry, cherry, and summer fruit aromas. Best drunk with red or white meat dishes; approachable now, but will then keep for 6-7 years if cellared correctly.

Available September 2008.

Fleurie 2006 Domaine Champagnon
Ref: 3332125

This Fleurie from Domaine Champagnon is very well structured, and has lots of body, in keeping with the Champagnon house style. It has fruity, floral and spicy aromas, with a fruity flavour with vanilla and black fruit, and a smooth minerally texture. A fine well-rounded wine, drink around 17-18°C with meats, cheeses, and game. A good Sunday lunch bottle. Excellent now, this Fleurie will also age well and can be kept several years, losing some of the fruitiness and developing cooked-fruit flavours and aromas, with the minerally texture and spiciness coming to the fore. Unhesitatingly recommended, and only available in miniscule quantities, so get a few today!.

Fleurie 2009 Cuvée Tradition Domaine du Point du Jour Jocelyne Depardon
Ref: 3332140
** (*)

The superb 2009 vintage of Jocelyne Depardon's Fleurie. Dark purple, the nose is expansive, both floral (violets) and with rich dark fruit. On the palate this is a big wine; fleshy, meaty and rounded. Very approachable now but will last at least 5 years. Drink at 14-15 deg C with all meats, cheeses, or just on its own.

Available now.

Fleurie 2007 Fûts de Chêne Domaine du Point du Jour Jocelyne Depardon
Ref: 3332110

Fleurie, which can be quite a delicate wine, does not always take well to oaking, but this example works well. It's a dark ruby red, with a nose which clearly shows oak, but principally through vanilla aromas; on the palate there is plenty of red berry fruit and vanilla, with a pronounced smoothness, and beautifully integrated silky tannins; it's dry, and has excellent length with a savoury finish. It's medium-bodied and perhaps best described as elegant rather than blockbusting - for that, go for the oaked Fleurie from Jean-Marc Despres - but for those who like their red wines with some oak but not too full-bodied - and supremely smooth - this is the better choice. Works well with gammons and red meats - allow to breathe for half an hour & serve at 14° to 15°C .
