Pinot Blanc QbA Mosel 2009 Vinum Germania Weingut Kollmann-Lex,Thörnich
Ref: 4930074
£
Pinot Blanc is not a grape you see often in the Mosel, but it can be very successful. This example gives you a lot of wine for your money; a very pale yellow, almost water-white, with a principally mineral nose, but with some herbal notes. On the palate very dry, again with minerals, burnt stone and slate. Very refreshing, it makes an ideal partner for seafood, white meats, and fish dishes, especially in a creamy sauce. Also great on it's own as an apéritif. Drink chilled.

This Avidagos white is a fresh fruity wine offering great value for money. It's a blend of Malvasia Fina, Gouveio & Vital grape varieties. A very pale yellow, with a nose which is aromatic, floral and vibrant, with hints of tropical fruits - pineapple and passion fruit. The palate is light to medium bodied; there is quite some complexity here, with fresh orchard fruit and citrus flavours and a good long clean finish. This is an excellent crisp dry refreshing wine which should be drunk chilled and can be enjoyed with or without food. A great summer wine.

Quinta dos Currais 100% Síria 2008
Ref: 3512000
**£
Síria is a grape grown principally in the interior of Portugal. It is the most planted white grape variety in the Alentejo region, where it is known as Roupeiro. However, Síria is a grape which gives of its best when grown in cooler climates, as in hotter regions the wines can lack acidity and be insufficiently aromatic. For this reason it is now also grown in the higher and cooler lands including Beira Interior, where it producers excellent results, with delicate, fresh, and elegant wines. Síria is a very productive grape variety, with large numbers of small-berried small bunches. It can be tricky in the vineyard; it is resistant to mildew, but prone to rot, meaning it prefers dry well-aerated sites.

This Síria wine from Quinta dos Currais is a pale lemon-yellow, with a fresh fruity nose with hints of white flowers. On the palate there are complex exotic flavours, with stonbe fruit - peaches, and mandarins. Good acidity; a refreshing and unusual wine which is quite delightful and well worth some attention. Also it's a bargain!

Quinta dos Currais Selected Harvest 2008 White Wine
Ref: 3512001

Most blends get a name, but they don't do this at Quinta dos Currais; I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. Anyway, this un-named wine is a blend of 50% Fonte-Cal, 25% Arinto, and 25% Síria. A very pale yellow, with aromas of lychees, reflected on the palate along with gooseberries and yellow stone fruit, this is a lovely suimmer wine ideal as a partner for white meats and freshwater fish.

Quinta da Raza Vinho Verde Branco 2009
Ref: 3511000
£
Forget any preconceptions you may have about Vinho Verde - Raza's entry level Vinho Verde is a delight; a lovely refreshing summer wine which should be served chilled to 8-10ºC and which slips down nicely with shellfish, fish, or white meat dishes.

A very pale lemon-green, with a nose of white flowers, underripe orchard fruit, and citrus limey notes. On the palate it's clean, crisp, refreshing, with orchard fruit flavours. The finish is good, with clean crisp lively acidity and good length.

Medal of honour in the 2010 Contest of the Viticulture Commission of the Vinho Verde Region.

Quinta da Raza Vinho Branco Grande Escolha 2009 (Alvarinho/Trajadura blend)
Ref: 3511004

Ths wine is a blend of Alvarinho (see above) and Trajadura grapes. Trajadura is a lightly scented but full bodied white grape grown widely in Vinho Verde and normally blended with other local varieties in many Vinho Verde wines. Occasionally, as here, it is blended with Alvarinho to produce a premium Vinho Verde. Trajadura is also grown in Galicia in Northern Spain, under the name Treixadura. Very occasionally it is used for single-varietal wines though these tend to be quite light.

This paricuar Alvarinho/Trajadura blend is a very pale green with golden hues, and has a creamy nose with gooseberry aromas, not unlike a Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. On the palate there is good crisp acidity, with lots of fruit. The finish is long and flavoursome. This would make an ideal partner for shellfish such as mussels, and also for salmon, trout, monkfish or sea bass.

In stock - normally despatched within one working day.

Weissburgunder/Pinot Bianco 2008 Kellerei Kurtatsch Kurtatsch
Ref: 3950014
£
The Pinot Blanc grape was first introduced to south Tyrol 150 years ago from Burgundy. It spread rapidly throughout the region from the early decades of the 20th century, and in now an important variety there. This wine, from the slopes around Kurtatsch, ia a pale yellow-green colour, with fresh apple and pear aromas; these are reflected on the fresh lively palate, along with a clean smooth minerality. Drink around 10-11°C, as an apéritif, or with all sorts of fish and white meat dishes.

Cottier Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2006
Ref: 6420000

This is a cracking good Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc which offers great value for money. A very pale golden green, with a nose of gooseberries and newly mown grass, reflected on the palate along with flavours of lychees and a hint of tropical citrus - passion fruit and limes. It's got a fesh zestiness and there is good acidity. There is good length, with a little mineral sweetness emerging on the finish. All in all a great wine for summer or indeed anytime - I found it excellent with grilled seabass, but this would also work very well with all kinds of shellfish and other seafood. Chill to 11-12 deg C.

Another Beaujolais Villages rosé from the Gamay grape, this one from the excellent Domaine Matray in the north of the region, from a vineyard near Juliénas. It has an elegant nose, and a lively fruity taste. This is a great summer wine, very refreshing when served chilled to 8 to 10°. Great for the barbecue, also with charcuterie or just on its own as an apéritif.

Beaujolais Villages Rosé 2008 Vincent Lacondemine
Ref: 3332132

Another great wine from Vincent Lacondemine is his charming light, fresh fruity rosé, with its beautiful pale cherry-red colour, vibrant aromas of strawberries and red berries, and a lively mouth-filling refreshing taste. Made in very small quantities, this is an excellent all-year round wine, but comes into its own in the summer - ideal for barbecues - drink chilled (about 11°) with grilled meats, salads, or seafood dishes such as fruits de mer. Also makes a fine aperitif. I cannot overstate just how lovely this wine is - there is none of the weight often associated with Rosé - this one is truly elegant and will not disappoint. Drink now to end 2011.

Rosé Halbtrocken 2009 QbA Mosel Weingut Kollmann-Lex,Thörnich
Ref: 4930066
**(*)
This lovely rosé is an unusual blend of 50% Dornfelder and 50% Pinot Noir. A lovely pale salmon pink, with a nose of red berry fruit, with strawberry and redcurrant flavours on the palate. There's a small amount of minerality which shows mainly on the finish - along with a hint of cherry - which has quite good length. It's classified as Halbtrocken, but there's really only the slightest hint of sweetness which arises from a small amount of residual sugar. This makes a fantastic refreshing summer wine - chill it to 9-11°C and drink on its own or with grilled meats, salads, and pasta dishes. Great for barbecues and picnics - and the modest 11% ABV makes it good as a lunchtime wine.

Dom Diogo Vinho Verde Rosé Padeiro de Basto 2009 Quinta da Raza
Ref: 3511005

Padeiro de Basto is a synonym for Tinto Cão, a grape used in the production of both fine Port and Vinho Verde wines. Highly productive, it produces ruby to garnet-red colour wines with a distinctive aroma and taste, harmonious and flavoursome. It makes lovely rosé wines, such as this example.

A dark salmon pink, with aromas of strawberries and redcurrants, with a lively zippy acidity and masses of fruit on the palate. Good body, pétillant with more red berry fruit, with good length and a finish dominated by redcurrants. A lovely summer wine; drink well well chilled with barbeques, grilled meats, and salads.

Dom Diogo Vinho Regional Minho Rosé Touriga Nacional Colheita Seleccionnada 2009 Quinta da Raza
Ref: 3511006
**£
Tourigan Nacional is the principal quality red wine grape in Portugal. The colour of this wine is in my opinion more like a pale red - possibly that of a clairet from Bordeaux - than a rosé, with strawberry, redcurrant, and glacé cherry aromas on the nose, all reflected on the palate. Good body, with more red berry fruit, with good length and a finish dominated by redcurrants. Notable pétillance gives this wine a tremendously refreshing character. A lovely summer wine; drink well well chilled with barbeques, grilled meats, and salads. This is truly amazing stuff, fantastic value for money, and deserves to be tried.

Lagrein Rosato 2007 Kellerei Kurtatsch Kurtatsch
Ref: 3950010

Rosé wines made from the red Lagrein grape are traditionally called "Lagrein Kretzer" after a basket of plaited willow known as a "Kretz" used to hold grapes at harvest time. The colour of Lagrein Rosé wines from various producers varies from deep pink to an extremely pale ruby red. One of the earliest known wine-related documents from south Tyrol, dating from the early 16th century, at the time of the wars of peasants, refers to peasant leader Michael Gaismair forbidding his followers from drinking Lagrein Rosato to stop them brawling. In those days the naturally high acidity of the Lagrein grape would have produced a harsh unpalatable wine with excessive acid - nowadays malolactic fermentation transforms sharp malic acid into the softer lactic acid, meaning the wines are soft and gentle.

This example from Kellerei Kurtatsch ia a clear ruby red, with red fruit aromas. It is soft and on the palate, dry, with lots of fruit and a gentle mineral underpinning. Serve around 11-12°C on its own or with smoked fish or white meats such as pork or chicken. Also good with hams.

The 2007 Régnié from the Maison des Bulliats comes in new livery, with an updated label and it's now been given the title "Tradition Romantique". It's absolutely classic traditional Beaujolais - a deep ruby red colour with hints of violet, and a wonderful nose of pepper, dark fruit, rubbed bramble leaf, and earth. On the palate it is medium bodied, fruity and sappy, with lots of dark crunchy brambly fruit, spice, and a hint of liquorice. The finish is long and dry, again with dark brambly fruit, and a hint of gamey undergrowth. It is excellent with hams & pork/other meat dishes, and cheeses. Best served cool at 14-15C.

Quinta dos Currais Tinto 2008
Ref: 3512002

This wine is a blend of 25% Touriga Nacional, 50% Aragonês, 10% Castelão and 15% Rufete. Following traditional vinification, temperature controlled for 8-9 days, the wine is macerated and then aged 9 months in French and American oak barrels and a further 4 months in bottle.

A limpid ruby red with purple tinges, the nose is complex and fruity, with dark plummy aromas, raspberry notes, vanilla, cinnamon, and ginger. On the palate there is good body, lots of plummy & red berry fruit, and generous soft tannins, with good balancing acidity. This wine is a good match for red meat dishes, hearty stews, and strong cheeses. Open an hour before consumption. Drink - now to 2015.

Dom Diogo Vinho Verde Tinto Vinhão 2009 Quinta da Raza
Ref: 3511007
**£
Vinhão is a high quality red grape variety, recommended for use in all parts of Vinho Verde. There are few red varieties here, and Vinhão is the most used in the region. Productive, this grape variety produces red-garnet colour, vinous, full-bodied, balanced and flavourous wines.

This is a truly amazing wine well worth some of your attention. It has an incredible depth of colour - high opacity, almost inky - which leads you to expect a tannic monster, yet the Vinhão grape has here produced a wine which is soft, fruity, highly juicy & sappy, yet very flavoursome, and with just a little bit of spritz, which adds to the refreshing character. The taste is vaguely reminiscent of an Austrian Blauer Portugieser, with a creamy texture, and earthy flavours, overlaid with lots of rich ripe red berry fruit. The firm tannins and slighty spritz make this a great companion for food - fatty duck dishes from southwest France spring to mind as a good match - but this wine will also chill well, making it an ideal summer red, perfect for al fresco dining and barbeques.

This is a lovely wine, really distinctive and unusual, and with character by the bucketload - and I urge you to try it. It won a Gold Medal in the 2010 Contest of the Viticulture Commission of the Vinho Verde Region.
