Carnuntum

South-east of Vienna, and to the north of the Neusiedlersee is the district known as Carnuntum, with its 890 hectares of vines. Deep soils, cooling winds from the Danube plains, and the tempering influence of the lake combine to produce a climate ideal for the cultivation of Grüner Veltliner, Zweigelt, and Blaufränkisch. It is these latter red wines in particular for which Carnuntum is rapidly becoming known; monumental Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch, bursting with fruit and ripe tannins, plus quality Cabernet Sauvignon, make this a region to be watched.

Chardonnay Classic 2006
Franz & Christine Netzl
Weingut Netzl
Göttlesbrunn
 Ref: 436013

The Netzls like to call this their "Spargelwein" because it goes so very well with asparagus. A chilled glass of this stuff and a plateful of steamed or lightly boiled fresh asparagus, lightly dusted with flakes of sea salt.... heaven!

Very pale green-yellow, fresh fruity aromas with hints of grapefruit and stone fruits (white peach). On the palate it is fruity and elegant, with a creamy texture. Classic clean pure chardonnay flavours - no oak here. Long fruity finish with a hint of honey. Serve at 8-10 deg C with poultry, veal, fish, quiche, and of course asparagus.

Small quantity remaining.

Rubin Carnuntum Zweigelt Selection 2007
Franz & Christine Netzl
Weingut Netzl
Göttlesbrunn
 Ref: 4360000

"Rubin Carnuntum" is a term applied to red wines from Carnuntum which meet certain minimum requirements - eg minimum 18 degrees KMW, 50% thinning, no more than 2Kg of grapes per vine... Rubin Carnuntum may be made from premium Zweigelt or Blaufränkisch grapes, or a blend of the two.

This example from Netzl is made from 100% Zweigelt; it is a rich powerful specimen which has spent 10 months in oak. A dark ruby-garnet red, it has a nose of black berry fruits, and toasty vanilla. On the palate there is masses of fruit, supported by well integrated and concentrated tannins. Creamy texture with vanilla, and a hint of cedarwood. Huge length. A big wine ideal for food - serve at around 18 deg C with dark strongly flavoured meats, especially those dishes with a heavy sauce. Also good with chicken, and works very well just on its own.

Edles Tal 2004
Franz & Christine Netzl
Weingut Netzl
Göttlesbrunn
 Ref: 436008

Edles Tal is a blend of 60% Zweigelt and 40% Merlot. The grapes are grown near to the Netzl property in Göttlesbrunn in the Edles Tal and Holzweg vineyards, where rich loam and loess soils are ideal for these varieties. This is a truly fantastic wine; very dark ruby-garnet red, almost opaque, with powerful aromas of ripe red and black berry fruit, hints of chocolate and orange, and some vanilla. On the palate the Merlot brings softness, yet there is huge concentration of fruit flavours, supported by well integrated tannins. Distinct gamey edge. Huge length. Still quite young, drink now or lay down for 5+ years. A very big wine indeed which pulls off perfectly the elusive combination of power and finesse. Drinkwith dark full-flavoured meats such as spicy beef, venison, well-hung game, or cheeses. Recommended serving tem, perature 18 deg C. Netzl recommends allowing this to breathe for 6 hours prior to drinking.

Cabernet Sauvignon 2004
Franz & Christine Netzl
Weingut Netzl
Göttlesbrunn
 Ref: 436009

Another powerful wine from this estate; the grapes are from Göttlesbrunn, from the Bärnreiser and Kräften vineyards. Deep ruby red, with a nose of dried fruit, vanilla, and spice. On the palate there are dark berry fruit flavours, cassis, coffee, vanilla and spice, all elegantly interwoven and supported by a soft tannic backbone. Very smooth, and a big wine. Drink around 18 deg C, allow to breathe for 3-4 hours before consuming with heavy meat dishes - grilled or roasted - or fine cheeses. One of the most successful Cabernet Sauvignons from Austria that I have tasted.

Tiny allocation.

On the palate there is huge concentration of fruit flavours, with spice, plum, cinnamon, and chocolate all putting in an appearance. Huge length, long spicy finish. Serve around 18 degrees with veal, venison, well-hung game in a rich sauce, fine cheeses, and nuts. Allow to breathe several hours before consumption.
