Welcome to our bin-end sale. Wines are listed by country of origin and colour, but otherwise are in no particular order. They are sold on a first-come first-served basis and listed as individual bottles and not by the case -you can of course make up a mixed case of bin end bottles, or mix bin ends with other wines from the main catalogue as you wish. There are some cracking good wines here, representing excellent value for money. New wines shipped in future will be more expensive than existing stock due to major exchange rate shifts - bin-end pricing discounts existing stocks, themselves priced based on historical exchange rates - meaning this is a fantastic opportunity to stock up at prices which are never to be repeated. In many cases stocks are very low. Everything listed here is sold on a strict first-come first-served basis and is offered subject to stock remaining. Standard carriage charges apply. Domaine Daniel Pollier Pouilly-Fuissé 2005 Vieilles Vignes

This Pouilly-Fuissé from Daniel Pollier comes from a 5 hectare vineyard on chalky clay. The vines are aged on average 40 years, with some parcels as old as 72 years. Following autumn vinification, the wine matures in oak for 10 months - and as with the St. Véran, 25% new oak is introduced every year. A charming golden colour, this subtle wine has great finesse, with nuances of hazlenuts and grilled almonds. The maturation in oak adds honey flavours and hints of toast. You can keep this 6-8 years after the vintage. Of the two Pouilly-Fuissé wines we offer from Daniel Pollier, this one is softer and gentler. Grape: Chardonnay

This wine is made from the chardonnay grape, and has a golden yellow colour and is fruity on both nose and palate. Quite dry. It goes well with fish and seafood dishes, snails, and frogs legs. Perfect also for raclette and fondue. Also makes a good apéritif. Serve at 8-10 deg. C.

Another Beaujolais Villages rosé from the Gamay grape, this one from the excellent Domaine Matray in the north of the region, from a vineyard near Juliénas. It has an elegant nose, and a lively fruity taste. This is a great summer wine, very refreshing when served chilled to 8 to 10°. Great for the barbecue, also with charcuterie or just on its own as an apéritif.

Beaujolais Villages Rosé 2008 Vincent Lacondemine

Another great wine from Vincent Lacondemine is his charming light, fresh fruity rosé, with its beautiful pale cherry-red colour, vibrant aromas of strawberries and red berries, and a lively mouth-filling refreshing taste. Made in very small quantities, this is an excellent all-year round wine, but comes into its own in the summer - ideal for barbecues - drink chilled (about 11°) with grilled meats, salads, or seafood dishes such as fruits de mer. Also makes a fine aperitif. I cannot overstate just how lovely this wine is - there is none of the weight often associated with Rosé - this one is truly elegant and will not disappoint. Beaujolais Nouveau 2011 Domaine Philippe Deschamps Morne, Beaujeu Single bottle

Philippe Deschamps owns 6 hectares of vines in the central part of Beaujolais, on various sites around Beaujeu, Lantignié, Les Ardillats, and Quincié. Of these, just one hectare is in the Beaujolais appellation, the rest being Beaujolais-Villages and Brouilly. The vines for this wine are grown on lighter sandy soils.

Tasting note 22 October - I tasted the wine at Philippe's cellar at Morne, after a light lunch in Beaujeu. The wine had been bottled just that morning, so was still in bottle-shock. As the wine was poured the first thing that was apparent was the colour - a vibrant purple, somewhat deeper than last year's. On the nose there are notes of violets, peony, and plenty of ripe red and dark fruit. On the palate there is lots of zippy ripe red fruit, and there is good length.

The wine was bottled just a few hours before tasting, and will settle and stabilise between tasting and the release date, and I will update the tasting note at release.

Beaujolais Villages Nouveau 2011 Vincent Lacondemine Single bottle

Vincent Lacondemine makes Beaujolais Villages Nouveau from his youngest vines grown on south-facing slopes around the town of Beaujeu.

I tasted this wine with M. Lacondemine on the morning of 22 October; the wine was bottled two days prior to my tasting it. Despite the lack of time in bottle, my initial reaction is that this is the best Nouveau yet from M. Lacondemine, better even than the outstanding 2009 wine. The colour is a deep ruby/granite red, with purple tinges, and is somewhat darker than last year's wine. On the nose there is plenty of vibrant dark rich fruit; on the palate there is ample rich punchy red and dark fruit, with rich silky tannins, plumskin, a good lick of spice, some more exotic fruit flavours, and really good length. But this wine has an altogether more serious feel to it than in previous years; it's got fantastic structure, and is more complex than normal, and will even pair well with richer cuisine such as dark meats and game than would a typical Nouveau.

The wine was tasted only a couple of days after bottling, and will settle and stabilise before release; it was already really enjoyable to dink, but I will update the tasting note at release.

The 2007 Régnié from the Maison des Bulliats comes in new livery, with an updated label and it's now been given the title "Tradition Romantique". It's absolutely classic traditional Beaujolais - a deep ruby red colour with hints of violet, and a wonderful nose of pepper, dark fruit, rubbed bramble leaf, and earth. On the palate it is medium bodied, fruity and sappy, with lots of dark crunchy brambly fruit, spice, and a hint of liquorice. The finish is long and dry, again with dark brambly fruit, and a hint of gamey undergrowth. It is excellent with hams & pork/other meat dishes, and cheeses. Best served cool at 14-15C.

This is seriously good stuff and I'm pleased to have been able to acquire a small parcel to list. A deep red, with a fruity nose with mineral and vanilla notes. Full bodied, gutsy flavoursome wine with cooked red fruit and mineral flavours. Good length. A splendid example of a Chénas which is very approachable now but which can also be laid down for a few years. Try with red meats and game.

This excellent example of a Brouilly comes from grapes grown on the 3.5 hectares of vines in the Château Thivin estate in the Brouilly appellation on on the lower pink-blue granite slopes of le Mont Brouilly. A splendid purple with masses of fresh grapey fruit, red berries, and typical Gamay raspberry, violet and strawberry aromas, this wine has a rich rounded taste and superb finish. It is the ideal companion for regional dishes such as Poulet de Bresse à la Crème or with mushroom-based dishes (especially morelles, if you can get them), but will also go well with white meats such as pork. Serve between 15° and 18°. Château Thivin Brouilly will keep 4-6 years.

Fleurie 2006 Domaine Champagnon

This Fleurie from Domaine Champagnon is very well structured, and has lots of body, in keeping with the Champagnon house style. It has fruity, floral and spicy aromas, with a fruity flavour with vanilla and black fruit, and a smooth minerally texture. A fine well-rounded wine, drink around 17-18°C with meats, cheeses, and game. A good Sunday lunch bottle. Excellent now, this Fleurie will also age well and can be kept several years, losing some of the fruitiness and developing cooked-fruit flavours and aromas, with the minerally texture and spiciness coming to the fore. Unhesitatingly recommended, and only available in miniscule quantities, so get a few today!. Very limited stock.

Fleurie, which can be quite a delicate wine, does not always take well to oaking, but this example works well. It's a dark ruby red, with a nose which clearly shows oak, but principally through vanilla aromas; on the palate there is plenty of red berry fruit and vanilla, with a pronounced smoothness, and beautifully integrated silky tannins; it's dry, and has excellent length with a savoury finish. It's medium-bodied and perhaps best described as elegant rather than blockbusting - for that, go for the oaked Fleurie from Jean-Marc Despres - but for those who like their red wines with some oak but not too full-bodied - and supremely smooth - this is the better choice. Works well with gammons and red meats - allow to breathe for half an hour & serve at 14° to 15°C .

This is the jewel in the crown of the Matray range of wines; made from grapes from vines aged on average over 60 years, it spends 10 months in oak. Deep ruby red with granite tinges, it has a nose of vanilla, spice, and raspberries. Supple and well balanced, this is a powerful wine which will keep many years. Morgon Corcelette 2006 Domaine Fernand Gravallon & Cédric Lathuilière

Corcelette is one of the climats, or sub-zones, of the Morgon appellation. Here, vines grow on soils of clay and sand created from the decomposition of granite. This sand is locally called "roche pourrie", or "rotten earth". Most vines in the vineyards where this wine originates are over 45 years old.

This Morgon from Fernand Gravallon is a dark red/purple, with aromas of violets, Kirsch, and minerals, mirrored on the palate, which has good body. Excellent ageing potential, and good with food. Drinking superbly well now - this is the vintage to go for if you want a mature Morgon to drink now. May also be cellared for some years to come. Excellent with cheeses and game. Drink around 14-15 deg. C.

80 year-old vines, with very low yields, produce wines with great concentration of flavours and aromas, with an incredible roundness. The wine spends a year in large oak foudres (30 to 75 hectolitre casks). The bouquet intensifies as the wine matures. Best with a bit of time in bottle, and drinking really well now - this is the one to go for if you want to drink it now, the 2009 is for cellaring. Drink with red meats with rich sauces, or fine cheeses.

This wine is made from grapes from 45 year-old vines with yields restricted to 50hl/hA. It spends 6 months in foudres after fermentation is complete and was bottled in May. It is still young and M. Bertolla reckons it will improve with further bottle aging. Nevertheless, to me it seems very approachable already. Deep ruby red, with a complex powerful nose full of earth, spice, truffles and smoke, on the palate it is dry, full-bodied, and full of rich cooked red and black fruit; very juicy and sappy, with great length. A lovely wine.

This Domaine has been in the same family for 5 generations, and has a fine reputation throughout the Beaujolais. It has 10 hectares of vines which are located on the hillsides of Saint-Amour overlooking the Saône valley to the east. We have been visiting here for many years, and have found the Saint-Amour made by Évelyne & Jean Guy Revillon to be consistently excellent. They only make Saint-Amour, and they do it well. A bit of history here - Mme. Revillon's father, Louis Dailly, was in fact the man responsible for the founding of the Saint-Amour appellation in 1945.

A savoury style wine, cherry-red with a nose of red berry fruit (raspberries, redcurrant) with a chewy full-bodied palate and long warming finish. Drink between 12°-14° with red meats or poultry. Silk-screen printed Cupid-themed bottle. Drinking very well now.

Superb red Mercurey; a deep pastel red, with an arresting nose of cherry, raspberry, and red berry fruits, with a hint of truffle and woodsmoke. On the palate this is quite rich and juicy, with a core of sweet red fruit, plumskins, and crisp tannins. The acid structure is excellent, and the finish is long, dry, and savoury. Excellent with steak, beef stews, or poultry.

Savigny-Les-Beaune 2004 "Les Fourneaux" Joël Remy Sainte-Marie la Blanche, Beaune

Wines from Savigny-les-Beaune, with their medium purple robe, and heady scents of ripe red fruit, are said by some to express femininity. This 100% Pinot Noir wine is from a vineyard known as "Les Fourneaux" ("The furnaces"), where vines aged on average 25 years grow on chalky-gravel soils. The grapes are manually harvested, selected, and de-stemmed prior to crushing, and natural-yeast fermentation follows, temperature controlled in stainless steel for approx 15 days. The wine is then oak-aged for some 12 months, 35% of the barrels being new each year. The wine is bottled unfiltered, and may therefore throw a light harmless deposit in the bottle. A medium intensity red-purple with a nose of morello cherry, blackcurrant, and raspberry. On the palate this wine is dry, very fruity, and has lithe silky tannins. Long dry finish, with tannins and a subtle earthiness showing. Drink around 15-16° C , with magret de canard and blackcurrants, or red and white meats.

Rotgipfler 2005 Ried Student Freigut Thallern

This Rotgipfler is from vines growing in Ried Student, a 5 hectare vineyard on heavier soils located in the lower part of Thallern between the village and the railway line (which follows the route of the old "Südbahn" which was constructed to give the people of Vienna access to the countryside and its wine villages). A medium yellow colour, it has a nose of minerals, honey, and peardrops, reflected on the palate, along with gooseberry flavours. Good dry crisp acidity, very refreshing with a very slight prickle. Good length with a soft peardrop/herbal finish. I am told by Michael Koch, the winemaker, that this wine is incredibly long-lived, perhaps 20 years, and that during its lifetime it will go through an initially very fruity phase (which is where it is now), then a less fruity more mineral phase, then finally fruity again.

Fermented for 14 days at 20°C in high-grade steel tanks, with a further maturation period prior to release also in steel. A very pale yellow-green, with a peppery earthy nose with hints of white pears. On the palate it has quite a concentrated fleshy character, with plenty of minerals and fruit and typical GV spiciness on the long finish. Crisp and dry white with good bite; very more-ish. Chill to 9° C and serve on its own as an apéritif, or drink with asparagus dishes, seafood or white meats such as pork or chicken.

This is an exceptional wine, and one I urge you to try. Aged in all new French oak (Josef Lentsch's maternal grandmother was a barrel-maker), this wine has a bright golden yellow colour, with a pungent spicy honeyed nose with a whiff of toasty oak, and a slightly buttery hint. On the palate there is again honey, with smoky toasty oak, masses of fruit, good body and structure. Excellent length, with a nice cleansing acid streak and a hint of sweetness on the finish. Top-notch stuff at an attractive price.

For drinking now, we recommend the 2005. The 2006 is exceptional but may benefit from a little more bottle age, and is the choice for laying down.

This wine posed a bit of a problem when writing the tasting note as it seemed to me to be dry yet with a hint of sweetness at the same time.....

A dark ruby red with an appealing dry nose of dusty, spicy red berry fruits. On the palate there is plenty of crunchy bramble & very ripe red berry fruit, again spicy, an earthiness, a savoury edge, along with a slightly creamy texture. Good length, and - here's the tricky bit - with a dusty dry finish, yet with a slightly sweet note at the very end. A most unusual wine - lovely with food - for me this worked well with a spicy Moroccan tagine - but would be good with most meat dishes, especially more flavoursome ones. Serve around 14-15 degrees C. Should breathe for an hour.

Typically the wine will be made and aged in several different barrels, before these are blended giving the final result. Quite a few of the Austrian producers in these parts make a "super-red" - usually a blend of 2 or 3 different grapes, and this is Sattler's example. It's a blend of (mainly) St.Laurent with some Cabernet Sauvignon and the odd bit of Syrah, and includes the best grapes from three different vineyards. It was aged in French oak barrels (60% new) for 15 months and bottled with minimal filtration. It is a true monster of a wine; a very deep pomegranate red, with an intensive nose of ripe Morello cherries, pepper, brambles, rubbed blackberry leaf, and a hint of mint. On the palate it is intensely flavoured, with black cherries, pepper and fine roasted aromas emerging on the long, long finish. It's at the same time very juicy and sappy, with a fine lick of smooth tannins and vanilla. Very good storage potential. Alc.13.5%. One for food.

This wine is a good example of a typical Blaufränkisch from central Burgenland - the combination of old vines and barrel ageing creates an elegant, complex wine with a long finish. The Hochäcker site is composed of hard ferruginous clay, and is ideal for Blaufränkisch and Merlot. The oldest vines on the site are roughly 80 years old. The wines that come from here age very well and are full of character. Native yeast fermentation in steel tanks is followed by pressing then 15 days of mash-state, biological malolactic fermentation in a large oak barrels & 17-month barrel-ageing.

A deep ruby red, typical fine Blaufränkisch nose, with presence of fruits such as cherry and plum. On the palate very elegant, creamy, with plenty of fleshy fruit, some roasted notes, and soft tannins all combine to create a warm and friendly character. Good long finish.

A Chardonnay made from selected grapes from the Gisborne area, partially barrel aged using 40% new French and American oak. A pale golden yellow, with a nose of gooseberry, spice, and a hint of citrus. The palate is rich and mouthfilling, with a creamy texture and savoury and vanilla flavours of the toasty but restrained oak complementing those of grapefruit and tropical fruit, and hints of white stone fruit and caramel. Extreme length, with toast and spice on the finish. An exceptional wine - drink now and till 2011.

This wine has been handcrafted to combine the ripe varietal characters of Gisborne Chardonnay, peach, grapefruit and citrus. Complimented by 40% new barrique ferment adding toasty flavours with savoury, toffee, vanilla, caramel and nutty characters. The palate is rich, integrated, and creamy and mouth filling with exceptional length and a clean lingering finish. Serve chilled - but not too cold, as you will miss so much - and open a good hour before consumption.

A blend of Waikato and Gisborne fruit, this wine was barrel fermented for 10 months in aged barrels to retain the lovely tropical fruit flavour with out to much oak influence. Another award winner this is a lovely mouth filling Chardonnay.

Once in a while I come across something really very special indeed, and this wine is just such a find - a tremendous success. Made from some of the oldest Gewürztraminer vines in New Zealand, it's got an amazing colour - a medium golden yellow, with a hint of pink (!) On the nose are lychees, ginger, boiled sweets, and pink grapefruit, topped off with a good dose of rose petals. On the palate it's a big number, with those lychees evident again, but also with ginger and spice. Great length, with rose petals again on the finish. This works well with flavoursome foods - lightly spiced Asian food, perhaps some Thai or Malay dishes. Just the very slightest hint of off-dry - 8.3g/l residual sugar. It doesn't taste sweet - the sugar shows itself as an enhancement to the depth of flavour. Ideally a food wine; could at a pinch be drunk on is own. Chill slightly, but not too much. Half an hour in the fridge door should do it. This is possibly the best NZ wine I've found to date. Will keep to 2010-11 if cellared correctly. (It wouldn't keep that long in my house!)

For me this is the highlight of the Quinta da Raza range.

Alvarinho is the Portuguese name for Albariño, the primary white grape widely grown just over the Spanish border in the Rías Baixas subzone in Galicia. The variety is thought to be related to Riesling, and is noted for its distinctive aroma, which bears similarities to Viognier, Gewurztraminer, and Petit Manseng, with notes of yellow stone fruit such as apricot and peach. It is considered by many to produce Spain's premier white wine. It is also a significant variety in northern Portugal where it is used to make single-varietal wines, and also appears as a component of some Vinho Verde wines.

This single-varietal example has a fruity nose with gooseberries and hints of yellow stone fruit, along with delicate aromas of rose petals. There is plenty of fruit on the palate, and good length. Drink at 8-10º C with plain grilled fish or white meats.
