Bin Ends
This section contains a list of our current bin-ends. These are wines which are heavily discounted as we wish to clear them out to make room for new stock arriving soon. In some cases stock levels are so low that they are not worth listing in the main catalogue. They are listed here in no particular order. These wines are sold on a first-come first-served basis. They are listed as individual bottles and not by the case - it is of course possible to make up a mixed case of bin end bottles, or to mix bin ends with any other bottles from the main catalogue as you wish. Standard carriage charges apply. Please note that occasionally bin ends may have torn/marked labels.
Beaujolais - Red
Beaujolais Nouveau 2007
Domaine des Pierres Dorées
Jean-Paul Devay
Ref: BN2007-be
Jean-Paul Devay's estate is at Le Breuil, in the south of the Beaujolais region. The "Pierres Dorées" - golden stones - in the estate's name refers to the local ochre-coloured stone used for building in this area.
Jean-Paul's early assessment of the 2007 vintage is that his wines will be slighty lighter than normal, but extremely fruity.
For my own assessment of this wine, see my report about my Beaujolais visit in late October on the Beaujolais Nouveau page.

Beaujolais Villages Nouveau 2007
Vincent Lacondemine
Ref: BVN2007be
Vincent Lacondemine makes Beaujolais Villages Nouveau from his youngest vines grown on south-facing slopes around the town of Beaujeu.
M. Lacondemine's comments on his Beaujolais Villages Nouveau 2007...
The vines flowered particularly early in 2007 - between 15 and 20 May, and this gave rise to the hope of an extremely early harvest in late August, but cool weather in the early summer meant that it took more than 105 days after flowering for the grapes to arrive at proper maturity, and a September harvest resulted. Nevertheless, 2007 still ranks as an early harvest, and the warm sunshine of early September gave dry conditions around the harvest and today (written 16 October) the fermentation has ended and the resulting wine has excellent fruit/acid balance. A vivid purple with powerful and complex aromas of red fruit, soft and smooth on the palate.
For my own assessment of this wine, see my report about my Beaujolais visit in late October on the Beaujolais Nouveau page.

Tradition 2005
Vincent Lacondemine
Ref: 330055
Vincent Lacondemine's Tradition is an absolutely classic Beaujolais Villages par excellence. A lovely ruby-red, with granite tinges, and great clarity. A complex nose of ripe blackberry and prune fruits, with fruit exploding in the mouth and soft gentle tannins providing structure. Bottled after 6 months in vat, this will last several years. Drink at about 13°.

Vincent Lacondemine's flagship wine; the low yields from the 80+ year-old vines used to produce "Les Larmoïses", and long carbonic maceration, has produced a big wine of great concentration. The tannins are already softening, allowing full enjoyment of this wine from late 2005 onwards. A perfumed nose with iris, violets and kirsch, with good depth of flavour and a velvety texture.

Côte de Brouilly 2004
Château Thivin
Ref: 330010
*
Made from grapes grown from 8.3 hectares of vines grown on the blue granite slopes of my favourite volcano, this is the wine which has been instrumental in building the reputation Château Thivin enjoys today. A lovely deep red with purple-blue tinges, fresh ripe Gamay fruit, violet and peony aromas, and delicate acidity to balance the abundance of flavour, combine to create a quintessentially fine example of just what a Côte de Brouilly should be. Delicious and easy to drink young or after a few years; this wine can be vivacious in its youth, yet becomes somewhat more elegant with time, keeping up to 8 years. A long aftertaste. Excellent with meat dishes and in particular poultry dishes with rich sauces, and magret de canard. Particularly good with a fine crumbly goat's cheese.

Côte de Brouilly 2004
Château Thivin
Cuvée La Chapelle
Ref: 330013
**
This is a Côte de Brouilly made from a south-facing 4 ha vineyard near the very summit of Le Mont Brouilly, in some of the sunniest spots on the mountain, and on blue granite soils. Aged in large oak barrels, it has a deep cherry red colour with granite tinges, witrh a dusty dry nose of bilberry, gamay grapes, and hints of orange blossom, cherry, and raspberry. On the palate it is smooth and dry, with plenty of lovely cherry fruit and a nice slither of tannin on the long finish. Will keep 3-4 years; drink with hams, charcuterie, white meats (especially with mushroom/cream sauces), pasta, and mildly spiced food.

This 8 hA Domaine run by Franck Bessone, son-in-law of Gino Bertolla of Domaine du Granit, has vines aged on average 40 years. Franck is the 3rd generation of his family to run this property.
A deep red, with a fruity nose with a mineral note. Full bodied, flavoursome wine with cooked red fruit and mineral flavours. Good length. A splendid example of a Chénas which is very approachable now but which can also be laid down for a few years. Try with red meats and game.

Fleurie 2005
Grille Midi
Cuvée Vielles Vignes
Domaine de La Madone
Jean-Marc Despres
Ref: 330039
**
60+ year-old vines in a hotter-than average basin in Fleurie create this serious chunky Fleurie more suited to accompanying stronger flavoured meats and cheeses. The 2005 vintage was exceptional, and this wine is a real success, with more body and structure than in a more typical year. Deep violet, powerful red fruit and bilberry aromas, great depth of flavour, baked fruit. Has a chewy, sinewy structure, with good length. A long-lasting wine that can be kept 5 years or so. Serve around 13-14°C.

Morgon 2003
Élevée en Fûts de Chêne
Daniel Rampon
Ref: 330021be
A very dark red with a nose of cooked red fruits. On the palate there is masses of fruit, yet the body is relatively light and elegant. Good length with soft tannins coming to the fore. Quite atypical for a Morgon, yet lovely.

Morgon 2004
Élevée en Fûts de Chêne
Daniel Rampon
Ref: 330022
This for me was the best of Rampon's range - an altogether heavier wine than the atypical 2003. Deep ruby red, with a nose of vanilla, rose petals, and jammy cooked red fruit, this has excellent body packed with fruit, smooth tannins, and very good length. Already quite approachable depite its youth, this one will go for quite a few years. Drink with red meats at 13-14 degrees.

Moulin-à-Vent 2004
Domaine Champagnon
Ref: 330019

This Moulin hits you with an intense aroma packed with raisin, plum, blackberry and chocolate. Complex fruit flavours including dark berries and cherry. Dark red in colour. a little restrained when young (yet eminently drinkable now), this powerful full-bodied wine will further develop over several years - maybe as many as 10 - definitely one for the Christmas dinner. A real treat. A magnum of the 1997 Moulin from Domaine Champagnon sampled recently was truly superb.

Régnié 2005
Domaine Prolange
Ref: 330047
I was very impressed when I tasted this wine; Régnié, as the most recent addition to the roll-call of Beaujolais Crus, is often cited as one of the lighter wines from the region, but this wine belies that assumption. It's a deep purple, with much greater depth of colour than is typical for a Régnié, with a nose of cooked dark fruit and spice; the palate is more intense than the nose suggests, but you could not fail to recognise this as Gamay - dry, fruity, but also slightly gamey as befits a heavier Cru. It's bursting with fruit, and has a good long finish which is dry, and slightly dusty. Really nice on its own or with food - try gammon, hams, charcuterie, or poultry.

St Amour Vieilles Vignes 2005
Domaine de l'Ancien Relais
Ref: 330049
Made from older vines grown on clay-silicate soils, this wine is an intense deep ruby red, with a nose of grapes and violets, with hints of stone fruits and kirsch. On the palate it's quite a big wine with excellent body, lots of very ripe red fruit, and some spice. The finish is quiite long, with spice and a touch of chalky earthiness emerging. An excellent wine which will keep 5 years from the vintage. Works well chilled on its own, or at ambient temperature with stews, hams, cold meats, or pork dishes.

Mâconnais - White
Mâcon Loché
"Les Chênes" 2002
Céline & Laurent Tripoz, Loché
Ref: 190411
This Mâcon Loché is very lightly oaked, which adds an extra dimension to this wine. It has a lovely bright golden colour, with a fruity nose, with hints of vanilla. It has lovely rich fruity flavours, and again vanilla from the oak, although this is subtle and provides depth rather than overt oakiness. This wine won 3 stars in a recent tasting by Decanter magazine. Chilled to around 13-14 degrees, this wine is excellent with fish, seafood, pork, and chicken dishes - or just on its own.

Domaine Daniel Pollier
Pouilly-Fuissé 2002
Les Perrières
Ref: 190402
*
Pouilly-Fuissé "Les Perrières" from Daniel Pollier comes from a very small (0.46 hectares) parcel of vines planted in 1960, on steeply sloping clay-chalk soil at Fuissé. Vinification is temperature controlled, and maturation is in oak barrels. Released younger than the Vielles Vignes, the result is a slightly racier wine with a greater attack and excellent structure; aromas of citrus fruits, vanilla, and oak, with citrus flavours, a note of dried fruit, and a long aftertaste. Charming wine, with elegant oakiness yet without loss of the original fruit. Superb with fish and chicken dishes, this will not disappoint. The 2002 vintage is the choice for drinking now; the 2004 is better for laying down for a year or two. Grape: Chardonnay
