Spring Mini Bin-End Sale

Welcome to our Spring mini bin-end sale. Wines listed here are listed here in no particular order, and are sold on a first-come first-served basis. They are listed as individual bottles and not by the case - it is of course possible to make up a mixed case of bin end bottles, or to mix bin ends with any other bottles from the main catalogue as you wish. In some cases stock levels are so low that they are not worth listing in the main catalogue.

There are some cracking good wines here, representing excellent value for money. New wines shipped in during 2010 will be significantly more expensive than existing stock due to major exchange rate shifts - bin-end pricing discounts existing stocks, which are themselves priced based on historical exchange rates - meaning that this really is a fantastic opportunity to stock up at prices which are never to be repeated.

In many cases stocks are very limited. Everything listed here is sold on a strict first-come first-served basis and is offered subject to stock remaining. Based in past experience, it is likely we will run out of some wines quite quickly, so it would be helpful if after placing an order you were to drop me an email letting me know of alternative selections in case some of your chosen wines are sold out. A few more wines may be added to this list over the duration of the sale so please look in again from time to time.

Standard carriage charges apply. Allow 14 days for delivery.

PLEASE NOTE MINIMUM BIN-END ORDER 6 BOTTLES

Pommard 2004 1er Cru "Les Fremiers" Domaine Coste-Caumartin Pommard
Ref: 334007

The vines of Pommard have throughout the centuries been coveted by Royalty or by religious orders, and the vineyard today known as "Les Fremiers", which takes its name from the old French word "Fremyer" meaning firm, or solid, was, in the 14th century, owned by the Abbey of Maizière. "Les Fremiers" is small - just 1.6 hectares - and is located on the lowest slopes at the southern extremity of Pommard, adjacent to Volnay, and has good south-easterly exposure. The vines are aged on average 25 years. After the grapes are crushed, the must undergoes a pre-fermentation maceration for 3 to 5 days at 15°C, followed by fermentation from 12 to 15 days at a maximum temperature of 34° C. The wine is then stored in oak (10-15% new each year), where malolactic fermentation occurs, for 18 months prior to bottling.

Pommard 1er Cru "Les Fremiers" combines elegance and power. A deep cardinal red, with a nose of red berry fruits and Morello cherries, which are reflected on the palate, where there is good attack and a powerful yet smooth fine tannic structure. Very good length. Approachable now, but will improve with further bottle age. The producer advises that if cellared correctly, this wine will peak at between 8 and 12 years of age. It is advisable to open the bottle two hours before the meal, and to serve at 16-17° C.

Nuits-Saint-Georges 2004 "Les Allots" Domaine Henri et Gilles Remoriquet Nuit-St.-Georges
Ref: 3335003

100% Pinot Noir grown in the "Allots" vineyard. Vines are aged 30-60 years, and are trained using the siimpl,e Guyot system. Annual production is small, typically 5000 bottles. "Les Allots" is located at the bottom of a south-easterly facing slope, and soil types here reflect the location, consisting of red silt and calcareous material wshed down the slope. "Lutte Raisonnée" pest control techniques are used in the vineyard. 100% manual harvesting is followed by cold pre-fermentation maceration, then 15-18 days of fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, with a maximum temperature of 32ºC to preserve flavours. Daily pigeage helps obtain maximum extraction of pigment. The wine is then aged in small oak barriques for 15-20 months, 30% being new oak each vintage. The wine is fined with egg albumen prior to bottling.

Serve at 15-16°C Keeps 5-15+ years from the vintage.

Côte Chalonnaise - Rosé
Domaine Daniel Pollier Pouilly-Fuissé 2004 Les Perrières
Ref: 3330007
*
Pouilly-Fuissé "Les Perrières" from Daniel Pollier comes from a very small (0.46 hectares) parcel of vines planted in 1960, on steeply sloping clay-chalk soil at Fuissé. Vinification is temperature controlled, and maturation is in oak barrels. This is a slightly racier wine than Pollier's Pouilly Fuissé Vielles Vignes, with greater attack and excellent structure; aromas of citrus fruits, vanilla, and oak, with citrus flavours, a note of dried fruit, and a long aftertaste. Charming wine, with elegant oakiness yet without loss of the original fruit. Superb with fish and chicken dishes, this will not disappoint.

This Riesling is from Church-owned vineyards on flat land surrounding the Church at Unterloiben (the church was a member of the Dinstlgut). It has a pale golden-yellow colour, and a smoky spicy nose, with a palate reflecting a mix of mineral and fruit characteristics, with citrus and stone fruit (peach and apricot) flavours, a mineral smokiness and a spicy herby note. The smokiness shows through in the finish. This wine is an extremely good match for fish and seafood dishes, especially smoked salmon, and also with grilled poultry and cheeses.

This Riesling has a clean bright straw-yellow colour with green tinges. The nose is light, and still somewhat closed, with spiciness and aromas of peaches, with hints of herb and grapefruit. Rotgipfler 2002 Ried Student Freigut Thallern
Ref: 250102

This Rotgipfler is from vines growing in Ried Student, a 5 hectare vineyard on heavier soils located in the lower part of Thallern between the village and the railway line (which follows the route of the old "Südbahn" which was consructed to give the people of Vienna access to the countryside and its wine villages). A medium yellow colour, it has a nose of minerals, honey, and peardrops, reflected on the palate, along with gooseberry flavours. Good dry crisp acidity, very refreshing with a very slight prickle. Good length with a soft peardrop/herbal finish. I am told by Michael Koch, the winemaker, that this wine is incredibly long-lived, perhaps 20 years, and that during its lifetime it will go through an initially very fruity phase (which is where it is now), then a less fruity more mineral phase, then finally fruity again.

Very low stock. A good opportunity to pick up a rare mature wine at a decent price.

Riesling Smaragd 2003 Steinertal Weingut Leo Alzinger Unterloiben
Ref: 240114
***
Alzinger's Steinertal Riesling is one of the greatest white wines in Austria.

The Steinertal vineyard is considered by many to be the best site in the Wachau; its primary rock soils are known for producing wines with the most pronounced mineral character in the Loiben area. This wine is no exception. A very pale yellow-green, it has a pronounced nose of fruit and white pepper. On the palate are citrus flavours, principally lime, and also pears, peaches, masses of minerals, and a soft pungent spiciness. Exceedingly smooth, with a long finish. This wine started life quite closed, as is typical of younger Alzinger wines, but is now developing immense depth of flavour and complexity - a process that will continue. This is the Steinertal Riesling to drink now, the 2005 is for laying down.

Grüner Veltliner 2004 Lamm Weingut Josef Hirsch, Kammern
Ref: 4372001
*(*)

Complete grape/cluster pressing, a lack of temperature control during fermentation, natural yeasts, and lengthy ageing in both high-grade steel and subsequently large oak barrels are the recipe for this wine. Caraway seed and minerals on the nose; the palate is quite different to what the nose leads you to expect, much fatter and full-bodied. There's lots of zingy flinty minerals, and lots of power - emanating from the deep loamy Kamptal soils - and plenty of delicate fruit. Excellent length, with a mineral finish. Fantastic with seafood, and lightly spiced Asian cooking - try it with Mayalsian or Thai.

Riesling 2005 Loibner Loibenberg Dinstlgut Loiben
Ref: 4300014

£
This wine is made from Riesling grapes grown in stone terraces (dating from the 14th century) on the Loibenberg, at an altitude of some 420 metres. The flavours are heavily influenced by the Urgestein soils in the Wachau and on the Loibenberg in particular.

A gold-yellow with green tinges; a rich nose of minerals and citrus notes, with a touch of spice and herbs. On the palate again spice and herbs, with ripe fruit in abundance, lively acidity, mineral underpinning, and good balance. Food recommendation: seafood, fish of all kinds, poultry. Also works well with hard cheeses and some spicy ethnic foods.

"Cronos" 2002 Erich Sattler Weinbau Sattler, Tadten

**
Quite a few of the Austrian producers in these parts make a "super-red" - usually a blend of 2 or 3 different grapes, and this is Sattler's example. It's a blend of (mainly) St.Laurent with some Cabernet Sauvignon and the odd bit of Syrah, and includes the best grapes from three different vineyards. It was aged in French oak barrels (60% new) for 15 months and bottled with minimal filtration. It is a true monster of a wine; a very deep pomegranate red, with an intensive nose of ripe Morello cherries, pepper, brambles, rubbed blackberry leaf, and a hint of mint. On the palate it is intensely flavoured, with black cherries, pepper and fine roasted aromas emerging on the long, long finish. It's at the same time very juicy and sappy, with a fine lick of smooth tannins and vanilla. Very good storage potential. Alc.13.5%. One for food.

Switzerland - White
Sauvignon Blanc de Chouilly 2002 Roger Burgdorfer Domaine du Paradis Satigny, Geneva
Ref: 220111

A light golden colour, with a distinct green hue, this wine is highly aromatic, with complex aromas of gooseberry, honey, smoke, and flowers. It's flavour is also highly complex, containing citrus fruit, gooseberries, honey, and peardrops. Oak is present but not overdone - as with Roger Burgdorfer's Pont des Soupirs Blanc, half of this wine is tank-aged, the other half oak-aged, the two parts being mixed in the final assemblage. An extremely satisfying bottle. Drink with smoked wild salmon.
