Online Catalogue  >  Bin Ends

Massive Winter Bin-End Sale

This section contains a list of our current bin-ends. These wines are from all parts of our catalogue; they have been remaindered for various reasons. In some cases stock levels are so low that they are not worth listing in the main catalogue, in others we may simply have too much stock. Occasionally a few bottles of something I thought was sold out turn up in the warehouse. Occasionally bin-ends may suffer cosmetically, eg they may have scuffed or stained labels. I have grouped the wines by country and colour, but apart from that they are in no particular order.  They are listed as individual bottles and not by the case - it is of course possible to make up a mixed case of bin end bottles, or to mix bin ends with any other bottles from the main catalogue as you wish. Normal carriage charges apply.

There are some cracking good wines here, representing excellent value for money. New wines shipped in during 2010 will be significantly more expensive than existing stock due to major exchange rate shifts - bin-end pricing discounts existing stocks, which are themselves priced based on historica exchange rates - meaning that this really is a fantastic opportunity to stock up at prices which are never to be repeated.

In many cases stocks are very limited. Everything listed here is sold on a strict first-come first-served basis and is offered subject to stock remaining. Based in past experience, it is liklely we will run out of some wines quite quickly, so it would be helpful if after placing an order you were to drop me an email letting me know of alternative selections in case some of your cosen wines are sold our.

A few more wines may be added to this list over the duration of the sale so please look in again from time to time.

Please note that we're having a short new-year break, and whilst you may order now, sale wines will be despatched from 13 January 2010.

PLEASE NOTE MINIMUM BIN-END ORDER 6 BOTTLES

Beaujolais

Beaujolais Villages
Rosé 2006
Vincent Lacondemine
 Ref: 3300096

Another great wine from Vincent Lacondemine is his charming light, fresh fruity rosé, with its beautiful pale cherry-red colour, vibrant aromas of strawberries and red berries, and a lively mouth-filling refreshing taste. Made in very small quantities, this is an excellent all-year round wine, but comes into its own in the summer - ideal for barbecues - drink chilled (about 11°) with grilled meats, salads, or seafood dishes such as fruits de mer. Also makes a fine aperitif. I cannot overstate just how lovely this wine is - there is none of the weight often associated with Rosé - this one is truly elegant and will not disappoint. Drink now to end 2009.

This Morgon from Fernand Gravallon is a dark red/purple, with aromas of violets and minerals, mirrored on the palate, which has good body. Excellent ageing potential, and good with food. Very drinkable now, with a year or so in bottle, but may be cellared for some years to come. Most vines in the vineyards where this originates are over 45 years old. Excellent with cheeses and game. Drink around 14-15 deg. C.

Rosé 2006
Domaine Matray
 Ref: 330079

Another Beaujolais Villages rosé from the Gamay grape, this one from the excellent Domaine Matray in the north of the region, from a vineyard near Juliénas. It has an elegant nose, and a lively fruity taste. This is a great summer wine, very refreshing when served chilled to 8 to 10°. Great for the barbecue, also with charcuterie or just on its own as an apéritif.

This is the jewel in the crown of the Matray range of wines; made from grapes from vines aged on average over 60 years, it spends 10 months in oak. The Rully vineyard of "Saint Jacques" is located at the northern end of the Rully appellation, where the Côte de Beaune starts. It is based on a steep slope and is East- South-east oriented. Vines grow on soil mainly composed of clay and limestone. Rully Saint Jacques is harvested in late September, and is then matured in French oak barrels (33% new, 33% 1 year old & 33% 2 years old) for 10 months on the lees with a regular Bâtonnage. During maturation, malolactic fermentation takes place. Final assemblage was followed by bottling without any fining or filtration. A mere 3,500 bottles were produced.

Savigny-Lès-Beaune 2004
"Les Fourneaux"
Joël Remy
Sainte-Marie la Blanche, Beaune
 Ref: 334016B

Wines from Savigny-les-Beaune, with their medium purple robe, and heady scents of ripe red fruit, are said by some to express femininity. This 100% Pinot Noir wine is from a vineyard known as "Les Fourneaux" ("The furnaces"), where vines aged on average 25 years grow on chalky-gravel soils. The grapes are manually harvested, selected, and de-stemmed prior to crushing, and natural-yeast fermentation follows, temperature controlled in stainless steel for approx 15 days. The wine is then oak-aged for some 12 months, 35% of the barrels being new each year. The wine is bottled unfiltered, and may therefore throw a light harmless deposit in the bottle. A medium intensity red-purple with a nose of morello cherry, blackcurrant, and raspberry. On the palate this wine is dry, very fruity, and has lithe silky tannins. Long dry finish, with tannins and a subtle earthiness showing. Drink around 15-16° C , with magret de canard and blackcurrants, or red and white meats.

Fendant AOC Chamoson 2006
"Trémazières"
Simon Maye & Fils
St. Pierre de Clages, Chamoson
 Ref: 4110073
**
This is a really excellent Fendant, one of the best I've tasted. A very pale yellow, with a perfumed nose of fruit and minerals. On the palate the first thing that hits you is the CO2 prickle followed by dry smooth minerality and hints of grapefruit; there is excellent length, dry, with hints of honey, stone, and gunflint, and an exquisite bitterness, leaving you wanting more... This is a racy wine, elegant, just lovely. Which is nothing less than you would expect from this excellent maker, widely regarded as one of Switzerland's best.

Sauvignon Blanc de Chouilly 2002
Roger Burgdorfer
Domaine du Paradis
Satigny, Geneva
 Ref: 220111

A light golden colour, with a distinct green hue, this wine is highly aromatic, with complex aromas of gooseberry, honey, smoke, and flowers. It's flavour is also highly complex, containing citrus fruit, gooseberries, honey, and peardrops. Oak is present but not overdone - as with Roger Burgdorfer's Pont des Soupirs Blanc, half of this wine is tank-aged, the other half oak-aged, the two parts being mixed in the final assemblage. An extremely satisfying bottle. Drink with smoked wild salmon.

The Pont des Soupirs Blanc has spicy and fruity aromas and a complex taste including spice, peach, and apricots. One of my favourite Swiss wines.

Grüner Veltliner Smaragd 2005
Berglage Loiben
Johann Donabaum, Spitz-an-der-Donau
 Ref: 430005B
**
Quite similar in style to the 2003 wine, but just a bit richer, more buttery, fatter. A very pale golden yellow, with a nose of minerals, spice, honey, broken peapods, and freshly ground white pepper. The palate is biased towards minerality rather than fruit, and there cressy lentilly flavours along with a touch of apricot, good body and an excellent acid framework in which the minerality sits nicely. Good length, quite peppery. Excellent stuff. This would go really well with a pork & apricots dish.

Riesling Kabinett 2003
St. Quirin
Dinstlgut Loiben
 Ref: 240132
£
This Riesling is from Church-owned vineyards on flat land surrounding the Church at Unterloiben (the church is a member of the Dinstlgut). It has a pale golden-yellow colour, and a smoky spicy nose, with a palate reflecting a mix of mineral and fruit characteristics, with citrus and stone fruit (peach and apricot) flavours, a mineral smokiness and a spicy herby note. The smokiness shows through in the finish. This wine is an extremely good match for fish and seafood dishes, especially smoked salmon, and also with grilled poultry and cheeses.

This wine really is green! A very pale green hue, with a nose of spice, cracked white pepper, and minerals, all reflected on the palate. A super entry-level GV with good "bite", classic GV flavours, a refreshing and good length. A great summer wine which represents good value for money.

Grüner Veltliner 2004
Lamm
Weingut Josef Hirsch, Kammern
 Ref: 437201
*(*)

We're offering 2004 and not yet 2005 because of the very late bottling practised by Hirsch - not normally till the summer of the year following the vintage. Complete grape/cluster pressing, a lack of temperature control during fermentation, natural yeasts, and lengthy ageing in both high-grade steel and subsequently large oak barrels are the recipe for this wine. Caraway seed and minerals on the nose; the palate is quite different to what the nose leads you to expect, much fatter and full-bodied. There's lots of zingy flinty minerals, and lots of power - emanating from the deep loamy Kamptal soils - and plenty of delicate fruit. Excellent length, with a mineral finish. Fantastic with seafood, and lightly spiced Asian cooking - try it with Mayalsian or Thai.

This wine is made from Riesling grapes grown in stone terraces (dating from the 14th century) on the Loibenberg, at an altitude of some 420 metres. The flavours are heavily influenced by the Urgestein soils in the Wachau and on the Loibenberg in particular.

A gold-yellow with green tinges; a rich nose of minerals and citrus notes, with a touch of spice and herbs. On the palate again spice and herbs, with ripe fruit in abundance, lively acidity, mineral underpinning, and good balance. Food recommendation: seafood, fish of all kinds, poultry. Also works well with hard cheeses and some spicy ethnic foods.

Similar sounding, but not to be confused with the Loibenberg. The Liebenberg is a vineyard located between Weissenkirchen and Dürnstein, and is the furthest Alzinger site from the winery.

A beautiful pale golden-green, this wine has an elegant fruity nose with notes of herbs and green pine. On the palate, the style is a mix of fruit, predominantly pears, and minerals. A juicy sappy racy wine, lovely now, but in time this will be extraordinary.

This wine is from the 8.5 hectare Frauenweingarten vineyard, which lies between Oberloiben and Unterloiben, near to the river, and which has primarily alluvial soil types, yielding fruity rather than mineral wines. The 2005 is classic Frauenweingarten GV - a clear pale yellow colour, with a fragrant nose of spice, pepper, and hints of red berry fruit (strawberry, I think). Loibner Loibenberg "L"
Dinstlgut Loiben
 Ref: 240148
*
£
This late-harvested Grüner Veltliner comes from vines grown on the Loibenberg vineyard, where terraces dating back to the 14th century reach a height of 420 m. The soil types are weathered primary rock ("Urgestein") over "Gföhler Gneis" consisting of loess and lime layers. It has a wonderful golden yellow colour, and a fine bouquet with fine fruit and delicate honey tones and a mineral spiciness. On the palate a silky delicacy, harmonious fruit and acidity complement the residual sweetness, giving the wine maturity and finesse. A wine with depth, elegance, and a long lingering finish; one to enjoy. This wine will go well with strong, spicy cheeses, grilled poultry, pâtés, and light-to moderately spicy ethnic food - particularly sweet & sour dishes.

The Netzls like to call this their "Spargelwein" because it goes so very well with asparagus. A chilled glass of this stuff and a plateful of steamed or lightly boiled fresh asparagus, lightly dusted with flakes of sea salt.... heaven!

Very pale green-yellow, fresh fruity aromas with hints of grapefruit and stone fruits (white peach). On the palate it is fruity and elegant, with a creamy texture. Classic clean pure chardonnay flavours - no oak here. Long fruity finish with a hint of honey. Serve at 8-10 deg C with poultry, veal, fish, quiche, and of course asparagus.

Riesling Spätlese 2001
Loibner Loibenberg "L"
Dinstlgut Loiben
 Ref: 240113
*
This wine is made from a selection of grapes from the best parts of the Loibenberg, which are late harvested, giving a deeper yellow than is typical for Loibenberg wines. It's only made in years when conditions are right, and 2001 was a good year for botrytis, helping colour and concentration. This is a truly lovely wine; the nose is of concentrated citrus aromas, principally lime, but also lemon and stone fruit. It explodes in the mouth, full of zingy and immensely complex lime and lemon flavours, and also apricot, and peach, and has a spicy creamy texture. Despite being classified lieblich, this wine is best described as off-dry. A big wine which will develop further; an example from 1997 tasted recently had immense depth of flavour and concentration. An excellent match for flavoursome foods; try it with spicy food, (Thai, Malaysian) or chicken livers.

Michael Schweighofer's Riesling from Ried Höhereck is made in tiny quantities - typically just 2000 bottles per year. A pale yellow, this wine has a good fruity nose, with hints of citrus, and has excellent structure, again fruity and with limey citrus flavours (which will deepen in time) and a nice acid streak on the finish, which is long. Very good value.

Kremser Pfaffenberg
Dinstlgut Loiben
 Ref: 431007
£
This Riesling has a clean bright straw-yellow colour with green tinges. The nose is light, and still somewhat closed, with spiciness and aromas of peaches, with hints of herb and grapefruit. On the palate it is full-bodied, concentrated, with lots of ripeness and a creamy texture, with flavours of spice and apricot, a zingy citrus note, and a subtle minerality. Quite rich and complex already, will develop greater depth of flavour and a more concentrated nose in time. Ideal with fish and seafood, also with white meats and poultry.

This Neuberger has a clean pale yellow/green colour and a warm honeyed nose. On the palate are flavours of peardrops and honey, some spiciness, and a marked minerality. Good length. Neuberger is a difficult grape to cultivate due to its thin skin, which makes it susceptible to bird damage. It is therefore very vintage-dependent; with dry conditions around harvest time needed to avoid rot. 2002 was hot and dry in the Kremstal at harvest time, and this wine is an excellent example. Try it with roast pork, salmon dishes, and salads.

This Pinot Blanc is made from grapes grown in various sites in the region. It has a pale golden-green colour, with a light fruity nose. On the palate it is nutty, with honey and walnut flavours, good body, and good acidity. Long finish. Liupna is the ancient name for the hamlet of Loiben. This wine is a blend of four white varieties - Riesling, Grüner Veltliner, Muskateller, and Traminer. The percentage of each varies with the vintage to maintain consistency, but Grüner Veltliner is normally more than 25%. It is pale yellow with a gold/green gloss, a fruity and sweet floral nose - evidence of the Muskateller - and a dry fruity taste. It is very elegant, and makes a lovely summer wine. It goes especially well chilled with Asian/spicy foods and salads.

Extremely pale in colour, near water-white. Perfumed grapey nose, quite delicate. On the palate this is a bigger wine than the nose suggests; zesty, very refreshing, with complex green apple flavours and good mineral support. Grapefruit in the finish. A fantastic apéritif or summer wine. A really nice example of Muskateller.

A stunning Pinot Noir from one of Austria's best red wine makers. The climate and soil types in Thermenregion - often compared to Burgindy - are ideally suited to Pinot Noir, and this example from Christian Fischer does not disappoint. A deep ruby red, with fine deep bouquet, is pure Pinot on the palate, with a cinnamon, spice, and kirsch; the finish is long and flavoursome. A good match for dark meats, game, mushrooms, soft red cheese and blue cheese.

Cottier Estate Pinot Noir 2005  Ref: 640002B

A great value Pinot Noir from a single vineyard. The 2005 vintage had excellent seasonal growing conditions which augured well for ripe and well-balanced fruit. However, unseasonal cool, damp conditions in December resulted in an exceptionally light crop. The good news is that the small quantities of fruit developed an intensity and complexity of extraordinary depth.

Cottier Pinot Noir 2005 is a deliciously dark crimson colour, exuding notes of black cherries and plums. Complexity is added with subtle overtones of savoury oak the result of maturation for 12 months in an ensemble of the finest French barriques. Excellent for drinking now, but will improve with age. Expect it to develop to its full potential over the next couple of years. Works extremely well with a wide range of dishes - pizza/pasta through to steaks and more flavoursome meat dishes such as duck, venison, and other game.
