Beaujolais
Beaujolais Appellation
Classic Beaujolais is a simple light red wine made from the Gamay noir à jus blanc grape (more simply Gamay), and is vibrant purple in colour, with plenty of fresh soft fruit and fruity floral aromas. It is a refreshing thirst-quenching wine best drunk young. It is made mainly in the southern part of the region, by a mixture of co-operatives and small Domaines. The predominance of the co-operative means that Beaujolais selection requires some care; however it is quite surprising just how good some Beaujolais can be. Though the wines are simpler and lighter than the Crus in the north, the humble Gamay grape can, on the right terroir, and in the right hands, produce some stunning results. Terroir is particularly important; soils here tend to be sandier and have less granitic composition than further north, yet there are some granitic outcrops where excellent wines can be produced, with much body and character. Whilst most Beaujolais wine is red, limited quantities of white (made from Chardonnay) and Rosé (from the Gamay) are also made - these may come from either the Beaujolais or Beaujolais Villages appellations. We have selected Beaujolais wines from 2 particularly excellent producers who leave the mass market offerings in the shade.
Beaujolais 2005
Côteau du Layet
Domaine Garlon
Ref: 330046
*
This 15-hectare family estate at Theizé, in heart of the "pays des Pierres Dorées" in the south of the Beaujolais, has been in existence since 1750. The vineyard is exposed to full sun, and the soil type is chalky clay.
A convivial wine with a bright purple robe, with a complex fruity bouquet, and a palate dominated by red fruits. A cracking good everyday bottle. Pop it in the fridge door for half an hour and drink on its own or with hams, pork, and poultry dishes. Keeps 3+ years from the vintage. Silver medal at the Concours General competition in Paris in 2006.
Sold out.

Beaujolais 2005
Domaine des Pierres Dorées
Jean-Paul Devay
Ref: 330054
*(*)
2005 marks the return of this wine; as the premium wine of the estate, it is made only in years when the quality of the available fruit justifies its production, and Jean-Paul elected not to make this wine in 2004. It has a splendid cherry-red colour, with strong aromas of raspberry and cherry, and a superbly smooth plummy mouth-filling taste. Le Breuil has granitic outcrops, giving more structure to the wines, which are rich in tannins. The 2005 has more body than is typical; the excellent weather has produced grapes with above average ripeness, giving a dense powerful wine. Serve at 14° with most meats and cheeses, or just on its own. Nice lengthy aftertaste. Ideal for drinking now, but will improve further with time and will keep several years.
