Wachau/Kremstal Red Wines
Red Austrian Wines from the Wachau & Kremstal
Red wine used to be a bit of a mixed bag in Austria. Austrian reds had acquired a bit of a reputation as being thin and bland, however all that is now changing, and quality-conscious growers are now turning out some good stuff, with some excellent fruity spicy wines being made from the Austrian varieties such as Blauer Zweigelt, Saint Laurent, and Blauer Portugieser. You'll also find some of the well-known international varieties including Pinot Noir, Merlot, and even Cabernet Sauvignon, which was very fashionable recently but whose popularity now seems in decline. There are also some excellent blends. Most of the best reds come from the south-eastern regions of Thermenregion and Burgenland, where the highest temperatures in Austria allow high degrees of ripeness; however occasionally one comes across excellent examples in other regions. This page lists our Wachau and Kremstal red selections. Have a look also at the Austrian mixed cases page, where there are some ready-made selections of reds fro all the regions we represent.

A versatile wine which goes well with roasted and grilled meats, particularly beef and lamb, and also with game, poultry, Pasta and rich cheese dishes.

Jochinger Mittelbergen 2004
Zweigelt & Saint Laurent
Weingut Josef Jamek
Joching
Ref: 430023
A blend of Zweigelt and St. Laurent, grown around Joching. Soft and fruity, with the Zweigelt contributing sour red cherries and the St Laurent a soft plumminess; it's juicy and fragrant, satin smooth, and a great accompaniment to pizzas, past, salads, and and chicken dishes. Benefits from slight chilling as you would a mid-weight Beaujolais Cru - half an hour in the fridge should do it.
